Not been completely happy with the standard six speaker set up, it was ok but to get more bass you lost clarity on the mids and highs, this was due to it only having 6 3/4 speakers in the footwell and a tweeter on the door
I had some JBL 3.5 inch 2 way speakers laying around so decided to fit them in the doors
After removing the door panel you find the speaker grill is blanket of with a thick plastic plate, this makes an ideal adapter to fit my JBL's to, wires were spliced into the tweeter feed
If you don't want to spend too much but want an upgrade this is the one to do, makes a huge difference to the muddy bass
If I had not already bought new footwell speakers I would probably have left it at that.

Next I fitted the new footwell speakers, 6.5 JBL GTO 627 2 way speakers, they came with two sets of adapter rings, I needed the plastic ring to fit on passenger side and the metal ring on drivers side, not sure why but the drivers side speaker has a spacer behind the speaker, this made fitting the new speaker very easy as I just screwed the metal adapter ring to the spacer, the speaker to the ring then bolted it all back in position.

I'm no audio fanatic I just wanted it a little better, I'm more than happy with the results
Good clear mids and highs with defined bass

I'm sure I've got some spare 6.5" JBLs sitting in the garage (removed from a car years ago) - might have a go at fitting them if I'm bored...

Ooh, been thinking about this myself. So good to see some model numbers in your post, ta. How big is the improvement?

I find i want a bit more low down bass - is this for me? I'm no boy racer driving round with a fat baseline going, but do enjoy some loud music, and car is the best place to listen without upsetting the neighbours!

I think the best way to sum it up is it allows more bass without loosing clarity
If it's just bass your after try fitting one of the "under seat" subs, it won't fit under the seat but at 80 mm deep it will fit behind the seat and it just needs a line in from one of the front speakers

Not just bass, general sound improvement would be good too, especially clarity as vol goes up, which is what i think you are are saying has improved?

Seen other people warning off the under seat subs as they aren't much bigger than footwell speakers, and suggesting amping them instead...

Think I'll start by doing something similar to you - better footwell speakers and adding door speakers.
