Change of job forcing sale

Alpina D3 (single turbo) has a similar power output and economy as the 123D, but in a better body, and with a few tweeks to keep things interesting. Can be had from about £13k, and look the bees and I would take it over both the options above. Insurance is reasonable, too, as are running and service costs. My D3BT gives 45mpg, and real-world D3 numbers are in excess of this. Both beat the pants off a 320d Msport for ride and performance, and the 1-series is fugly, and cheaply built in comparison to a 3.

Beat me to it,

I do 800-1000 miles per week in my D3BT, if I'm steady on the motorway I can get around 45mpg, but if im around and about at the weekend it drops to about 38mpg.

Just done some calculations for you based on:

13,000 miles PA
Z4 coupe averaging 32mpg
123d averaging 55mpg
diesel costing approx 5ppl more than petrol

You would be better off by £900 a year in petrol and another £100 or so saved on tax so call it £1,000.

Which in my opinion is easily a price worth paying to own a 265bhp 6 cylinder work of art compared to a 4 cylinder 1 series (albeit a nippy one)

BUT there are other things to consider. If you trade then you have to take a hit on trade-in AND pay the dealer markup, so you get stung twice which will probably take 2 years to recoup in fuel savings.

The 123d will probably lose more in depreciation with the added mileage because its a newer car and the E86 is a future classic.

By many accounts i've read the 55mpg is a bit optimistic, try knocking off 10mpg to get a realistic average. This is caused in part by a very low ratio differential which aids acceleration but revs too high at motorway speeds = poor mpg. On the other hand the N52 3.0 petrol 6 tends to be pretty much bang on the book figures.

Depending on how long you keep it, the complicated twin turbo diesel will have more potential to give you trouble in the long run.

The 123d is an excellent car, I've considered one myself recently since becoming a father I need to think of something more practical. However to me the sums don't add up. I'd keep the Z4 or get a 120d instead, it's only 27bhp down on the 123d but miles cheaper to own.

Great response!!

This is an interesting post, as I maybe changing work location from Swindon to Bristol. Subsequently I will than drive the Mini daily and the wife will drive the Zed much short drive to Chippenham. I had no plans to get rid of the Zed as I felt that as the Zed was pretty good on fuel etc Its was a keeper. Interesting to see the points raised it just reconfrims my reasons to keep the Zed! :D

I do think you have been kind in your calculations on the trade in / purchase / deperication calculation as I reckon in all fairess it could cost up 3 years in real terms, so keep the zed! simples! :P

Keep the Z. My commute as gone from 10 miles a day to 75 miles for 1 year then 100 miles for 7 months and now I only use it once a week. I looked at changing or running a second car but decided against. My Z has been faultless, and when not pushed its pretty economical with over 400 miles to a tank.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've not been here today so only just caught up. I will be looking at the cost to change before I do actually change. It is possible that I will consider keeping the zed. I did look at the 3 series but don't really need a car that big and if the economy is only 45mpg it won't be worth changing. Getting at least 50 is what I think is needed. I will take a look at the Alpina though.

My estimated mileage will be almost 18500 miles/ year just to get to work. So if the cost to change isn't that great it will be worth it in the long run.

Am getting average 32mpg ... to be fair since ownership I do genrally take it steady , unless the wifes not in the car  :driving:  ... get well into the low teens then!!!

Keep the Z and enjoy the drive to work. For the difference you are going to spend, you can buy a lot of fuel.If you change to a 1 series diesel, it will always only be a 1 series diesel.

Totally agree, i do 70 miles round trip daily in the Z4M coupe....I got rid of an e39 M5 for the Z4M....but the M5 was a huge petrol eater....Love my M Coupe!

Sorry to post hijack but what option is your spoiler looks great 8)

For cost saving purposes a 123d would make a lot of sense, you will still be getting serious performance, especially with a remap. Cheaper insurance, road tax, and decent fuel economy makes it quite appealing. Though as said the quoted 54mpg figure does sound optimistic. But to counter what was said on depreciation the 1 series seems to hold its value very well imo.

I would like a flappy paddle box but I understand that you lose the stop/start function

Not sure that's correct, Porsche Carrera 991S has both :)

It certainly doesn't list it on the BMW website which I why I assume you lose that function.

NikB, yes you lose it with an auto 123d as you say. Newer cars - they seem to have managed it. Not sure you'll miss it anyway.

I expect the stop-start function will be a bit annoying, and I'll probably have mine switched off.

Looks like I'll be keeping the car for now anyway as there isn't enough equity in the it to make a sale worthwhile. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Glad to hear it

Did the wife buy that explanation then ?
