Ceramic Knife Set

I've always fancied a really good quality ceramic knife set that won't go blunt, tarnish, rust etc.

With the money some of you appear to have here, I imagine there will be a wealth of experience and knowledge. I've quickly found this set: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Exclusive-4-part-black-ceramic-peeler/dp/B005ICW3FA/ref=sr_1_5?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1365937361&sr=1-5&keywords=ceramic+knives#productDescription

I like the look but they don't come with a block / blade covers, and from what I hear, the blades are lethally sharp so are best stored covered or in a block.

Anyone got any recommendations? Looking for at least a 3 knife set, prefer black blade over white, and budget of around £60?

Thanks chefs

My daughter is studying with Leith's food and Wine school and they use metal knives. Drop a ceramic one or twist it and it will break. Better to get quality metal blades and a good steel and learn how to keep them sharp. Just passing on the semi pro info :)

Interesting, but from the pro-ceramic blurb, they do not pickup or transfer tastes between foods, they do not 'brown' fruit or veg due to not passing on metal ions, and remain sharper longer due to being incredibly strong.

I've had a few mid-price steel knives and while semi-neglected, have ended up with small nicks in the blade, blunt, rusty (woops, dishwasher victims! :headbang: )

CHROMA make some nice knives, I have looked after mine and they work. I think I would try the cheaper range if I was buying again. Looking after them is probably important.

My brother is a chef and he mainly uses Global knives at home..

I wanted some too,but he put me off them as they are pricey,so i bought a Wusthof set. They have been brilliant for nearly 10 yrs now, only sharpened 2 of the set once within that time.

Proper care is the key here... as you say, several have been victims of the dish washer already.

Budget of £60 won't get you much either. A lot of people rate Global knives, but a single 16" chefs knife will set you back £85...

I'm no wannabe chef, but I like a clean sharp knife is all

The £60 ceramic set seems to be ok, just needs a block or something to stop then being thrown in the drawer. £85 for a single knife if I had an amazing kitchen would be ok, but the kitchen is in a rental house and isn't top dollar (by a long stretch).

I recently did some research into knives and ended up with these award wining knives

Eurganomics are amazing, beautiful to hold and use.

From what I read for the money you can't get better.

As others have said care is key - no dishwasher. Cut onto wood or plastic. Not glass or granit. Regularly sharpen with correctly orientated wheel.

I'd say just buy one or two good knives for your money rather than a set. You can always add to it later.

I have a couple of these - nicely balanced and hold their edge well. Haven't found anything as good for the money.

My sister's a chef, my whole family pretty much swear by global knives. Wusthof are also meant to be good. Ceramic ones can break easily, though saying that - i have dropped a global pairing knife and bent the tip.

I bought a decent ceramic knife, just to try it out. I was very happy with it BUT...I am tragically clumsy and have a stone floor. The knife didn't live long enough to need sharpening, they do shatter quite easily!

I use these. But don't pay anywhere near these prices!

Don't get ceramic knives. I bought a set of 3 from Lakeland at Christmas and despite treating them with kid gloves I ended up with 1 broken inside the handle and the blade of another chipped in 2 places. Fortunately Lakeland refunded my money but I would never have another ceramic knife.
