hi,

got a question,as you might know I am changing my trim from brushed aluminium.my car has got the sport button and the airbag indicator, but the one I have found, doesn't have the airbag indicator hole on the trim. Can this be drilled?the trim in question is in carbon leather! would drilling this, affect the leather?any advice or tips?

thanks in advance.

I don't think you would just be able to drill through. My approach, guessing, would be to make the hole from the underside, piercing the top face as little as possible, to start with. I'd then cut a small X in the leather and gently push the airbag button through, opening up the leather hole and wrapping it around the inside of the hole - then glue the leather underneath. This should hopefully prevent the leather from spreading out from the hole - in the summer it will heat and can tighen, in this instance pulling it away from the hole. It should be doable. Srhutch or someone who's retrofitted may be able to adivse on the factory finish.

I'd be inclined to stretch and secure some material over the sport button hole and partice cutting and pushing the button through to see how it behaves.

thanks  the sport button is already on the trim,as I said it is just missing the airbag indicator, but as you said would be good to do a guide hole first, open the leather on the desired area and glue to the back.

or do you think,I shouldn't try doing it myself and get someone who knows what's doing, doing it for me?

The trim is solid aluminium, so it's going to be tricky to drill a hole leaving the leather in place.

I think your best bet would be to cut the leather out from above. It won't fray as it's leather so won't need gluing or anything. From memory the marking for the cut out is on the reverse side.

If you do it just take your time, otherwise it's a costly mistake.

You see navid.v, I knew pro like srhutch would have the answer. I would still be inclined to glue around the edge through, under the plastic cover just as a precaution against the leather contracting in the heat.

I would find out how much it would be for someone to do it properly... might not be too much more than the correct drill bit / cutting blade, for the job... something you don't want to skimp on! Also, they'd be insured (I would hope) in case it does go wrong. You could be cheeky and ask them how they would finish the job!

thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.

to be honest,I don't know what to do,can get my piano black trim completed and buy the correct parts or buy the carbon leather one, which means I have to sell the parts I already have!

just have to think this through.

Question is do you really want CFL that bad. I was looking for piano black trim as I never even thought about CFL but it can up and was very cheap and I do prefer it as there is no reflection, but if your paying nearly £400 for it (guessing) it's a lot of money if you cock it up.

I am not really fussed, but if I get a centre trim and little one by the headlight, that will be over £400 from bmw.

the carbon leather is the same sort of price,so not sure.

I've got to sleep on it :P

i love piano trim, thats what i have, but i could be as tempted with leather, big advantage is that it does not look as dirty, piano shows every dust particle

I have sent Joe an email to see what is best price he can do for the parts I require, that will help make my mind up :)

He quoted me just over £1k for the 3 CFL parts a few months ago, but guess your not after those prices.

I have the main dash part, what I need in piano black is centre trim and headlight switch trim which should be around £400,the small one is about £110 or 115,the centre trim was about £300 something unless you guys know of someone or somewhere cheaper.
