Centre Console Replacement Tray E89

Has anyone replaced the standard Z4 E89 tray unit comprising 2 cup holders and slot for additional phone gubbins? The whole thing is of no use to me and a simple tray with antislide mat would be perfect for my needs. Why would I pay a huge wodge of cash to just effectively charge my phone when I can do it from the arm rest power source as well as storing other stuff. I have no need for other alleged facilities offered by the rip-off phone cradles.

I find it strange that there are phone cradles available at a premium price yet many of the BT facilities don't actually work on many phones. However I digress.

There appears according to reports from US articles on this item that they got them from the UK. The recommended UK supplier doesn't seem to have them anymore and I can't find any other source.

http://www.realOEM.com show a whole bunch of centre console parts here http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=LL52&mospid=53586&btnr=51_7318&hg=51&fg=35

Presumably I would want the tray marked 6 in the diagram? Any other bits or screws needed? Anyone sourced this from UK preferably and fitted one?

Grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

Part 6 and 9 look like what you want, so long as when you remove your existing tray (presumably part 7) there is nothing protruding.

Have you tried your friendly local stealer?

$37.00 for both according to a search

£31 + vat according to the dealer... You might get 5% off that if you go in person and ask when you order...

I hadn't even bothered with dealer as there is no sniff of any replacement tray parts in the BMW dealer catalogue as far I could see or indeed Ebay or Amazon.

I'm going there tomorrow to pick up a few bits so will enquire. £31 isn't that bad for the utility it will provide me. I'm used to Porsche prices so that's a snip.

Thanks.

Although not in any BMW catalogue I have seen it exists.
Have ordered one from dealer as Maniac suggested.

£20.56! including 2 bolts. In person order no discount but cheap anyway.

10 day delivery as it is non stock part.

For those who need it:

I am fitting mine at weekend. Hopefully the e89 tray removal is similar.

had a look at mine today it has the phone cradle and it was a complete pain to remove managed it using a pry tool, but the connection cables to it is very short so it will not come out completely had to split the cradle in two then detach the cables and the circuit board it was difficult and will not be able to refit as the aerial connection is a permanent connection. The cable is quite large and there is not enough room to push it under the console without lifting it up which involves work I will probably cut the end of the cable as the phone cradle is unlikely to be reused.
I will post some pics of the removed cradle to show it better tomorrow

I have had another fiddle with this and discovered that the large black piece in picture 2 can be carefully cut away using a stanley knife
and the cables seperated. They can then be feed under the centre console enabling the oddments tray to fit.
Just waiting for it to arrive as had to be ordered from germany

Mine now been fitted by friend. No cutting or hacking needed and tray removed all in 1 piece and can be re-instated if needed later quite easily he says. Unfortunately wasn't there when he did it and he forgot to take any pics so can't be more specific as to how he did it.

The new oddments tray is certainly better for my purposes than the standard one with the useless cup holders and pre-mobile phone module arrangement. Can put mobile in there and charge from the console power socket. I also have a battery charger unit for a camera batteries which will fit in there as well as other small bits and pieces.

I already had an anti slip mat which fitted the tray thus avoiding the ludicrous £9 cost of a BMW one!

I would quite like to swap the smokers ash try out for the normal storage tray in front of the gear stick (so swap parts 2&3 for part 1 on here http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=LL52&mospid=53586&btnr=51_7318&hg=51&fg=35 ). For some reason you can't remove the smokers pack from new UK specced Z4s otherwise I would have done it, I mean seriously, how many people smoke inside their cars today?? (and even when they do actually put ash in the ashtray?! Stinks to high hell) vs those who need someone to store a pair of sunglasses?!

Looks like it might not be too easy though - rather than snap-in it looks like screw lugs on each corner so you would likely have to remove the top trim panel from around the gear shift.

Can someone get me the price of the part (part 1)? I don't know where to look for prices, if its reasonable, I might give it go.

Interesting thread.

We would like to fit both trays as non smokers and the cup holders are so badly placed for driving.

Does the ashtray lid stay with the Storage compartment, front ?

or it just becomes a open tray ?

Try dealership. Although it may not appear in dealer catalogue if you supply part number they should be able to quote you for it. Actually probably not that dear. The replacement oddments tray was less than £20 which I got via dealer who had never heard of it but was able to order from Germany in 10 days. The replacement ashtray unit should less than £10 I would guess. If there is a rubber inlay mat that could be pricier as the one for the centre console is a stupid price!

You will lose the power socket which can be useful and AFAIK it's not an easy swap although I'm no expert. I've left mine in as it can store some small bits and the centre one is now much more useable.
