Centre Console Refurbishment

Hi all, the centre console handbrake plastic area on my E85 2.0i SE is worn. I will probably end up taking the whole console out and replacing the damaged parts if I can find from a breakers yard etc. I know it's a time consuming and tricky job and was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and come up with a quick fix? I've asked a local supplier to see if they could do some sort of wrap in situ etc. Any thoughts would be highly appreciated, Best Wishes, Elsa centreconsole.jpg

Remove the centre console, unscrew the bits, sand them back and respray them. I done mine years back, as mine were pre-facelift grey and I wanted them black.

Hi Elsa, Where are you based?

Thanks Ben, I've taken the gear stick surround out and the centre console plate, I can now see the original parts have been sprayed with a matt black laques which has bubbled, I'm in two minds what to do now: either prep and spray the two removed bits and spray the rest of the housing in situ, or carbon wrap the shift surround and prep the plate and side panels and try an alcantara wrap......decisions, Best wishes, Elsa

Theses are the two pieces removed

Oh my ...... look at that, sh*t that would drive me mad, as my car OCD would freak me out looking at that.

i think the whole interior out and hoover dust polish and repair or replace and back to normality.

Hi Kamuela, indeed they do. First tease out the gaiter around the gearstick, this then gives you access to gently pull out the plastic gearstick surround which can then be removed by feeding over the gaiter so you dont have to take the gear knob off. This then allows the centre rectangular shape section to be pulled towards the gearstick and removed

Has someone spilled some acid or something on that plastic - never seen anything like that before! :o I would try and get it nice and even and spray it. Problem with that is, once you start putting things right, where do you stop...before you know it you'll have done your whole interior. :P

i bet whats happened is that that is the collection point for air fresheners............ :headbang: :headbang:

Yep. The liquid air fresheners, specifically. The stuff inside eats away at any painted trim. Same thing happened to my missus' Fiesta.

As said above, looks like acidic burn from air freshener.

Plastikote is pretty good paint and you can get satin black.

Hi Guys, decided to go with the Alcantara wrap option, cost less than a fiver for the materials and half an hour to make up a template, thanks for all the recommendations, Best Regards, Elsa58E9D399-3C0D-4AA0-B9E2-4975F4F889E7.jpeg
