Central Locking Problem

Having just bought a 2003 2.5i Z4 Soft top, I was dismayed when the central locking on the passengers door started playing up.
Still under warranty, so no real drama's, but interested to know if it's a known problem or not.

When locking the doors (either via the on-board lock switch, or the key remote) the door lock knobs retract fully and the doors lock.

When you then go to unlock the doors (again by whichever method) the drivers door lock-knob pops up as usual and the door is unlocked. The passenger door lock knobs, however fail to raise, although you can see a slight "attempt" and a clicking noise from somewhere in there.

If you then pull the interior door handle, the lock knob raises and the lock opens.

I am loathed to take a look myself as I feel it is down to the dealer, but would be interested to know if this is a regular problem.

TIA,
Steve

exactly the same problem for me. out of warranty so living with it for the time being. keep us posted on what the diagnosis is.

my first thought was selective unlocking - programmable option at the dealer that means you have to press the unlock button twice to let the passenger in.... but you say you can open with the handle :?

maybe worth a try anyway?

Thanks for the suggestion Gannet - but no go :(
Back to the drawing board......

Will post the response from the dealer in due course

Try resetting the key?

Both my keys suddenly stopped unlocking the cabin doors within a week, but they would still unlock the boot and lock all the doors (cabin included). I just reset them via option 3 on that link and they now work perfectly.

It only takes a minute to do so is worth trying.

Hi, i have a similer problem. I have a 3.0 z4 on a 04 plate.

Intermitantly, when i go to use the button on the key to enter the car the usual way, both the drivers door and the passenger door pop up buttons dont come up. If i put the key in the lock and open the car the alarm beeps and i disarm the car.
However the passenger door will not release using either the exterior handle or the interior handle, the pop button tries popping up when you use the interior handle but wont realease the door.
If i then use the button near the handbrake to lock the doors from the inside,( the safety locks,) the drivers door locks but neither the drivers door or passengers will release.
I can here a clicking as if something is trying. I have actually banged the panel on both doors and once it worked by banging on the passenger side and yesterday it worked by banging on the drivers side. But this may just be luck

I then have to open the drivers door once again with the key.

first time i noticed was on a frosty morning and then it did it again yesterday when it was raining. That might have nothing to do with it though.

its as if something is sticking.

This morning all ok. let me know what i can try. ie ressetting the whole lot if ther is a way.

Slapster - I think the most likely cause of the problem is the rod connecting the locking mechanism to the visible lock button (the bit that pops up) is sticking slightly. If not that one then the cable that runs from the lock actuator to the lock.

It's under warranty so no need to mess yourself, but I'd have the door panel off and check that the inner membrane and the foam that stops the metal rods rattling are not trapped.

Failing that it's dealer anyway for new control unit, reprogramming or new lock
