Central Locking - Locks but won't unlock

Hi guys,

The latest issue to affect my Zed is the central locking. The car locks fine, but won't unlock. Had a diagnostic done today at my good local garage, and the following fault code showed up:

29 - Relay for central locking, unlocking.

My question is, before I go and spend another possible small fortune on an auto-electrician, has anyone had any experience of fixing this yourself, and if so is it easy? I also replaced both central locking fuses but the problem remains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

**** Update ****

Just in case anyone is suffering with the same fault above ...

I went to BMW parts to try and obtain the correct relay, however they were vague as to which one I needed. After a couple of eye-watering quotes for a new GM5 module, a diagnostic and not to mention cost of repair, I walked out with the intention of going down the auto-electrician route.

I get to the car, clicked the button ... All working fine! Gave it around 10 more goes and perfect. Seems it may have been a sticky mechanism after all.

My main reason for posting back is because the diagnostic still reported a fault with the relay, however I'm beginning to think that may be down to the fact the mechanism faulted in the first place. So if it happens to you, give it a good few tries!!

Hi,

Yes this is a common issue with z4's and 3 series that use the same GM5 module.

The contacts can stick on one of the relays, meaning the car wont unlock from the key.

There is a fella on ebay who can replace just the faulty relay if you send him your GM5 module.

Around £80 i think.
