Seems to be a lot of these failing lately.
Perhaps we should be keeping the old ones with a view to getting a batch repaired if it's possible?

Too right! I was planning on doing that if I can't find one, but the car is my daily, and I don't know if it will start if I remove the module!

I would definitely go down the repair route. Crashdata receive very good online reviews and charge considerably less than a replacement unit.

I'm almost certain that you'll still be able to drive without the unit and clear all the codes later. Although maybe someone could confirm this for sure?

You possibly can, but if the worst happened your insurance would surely be invalidated?
