Center Console - top panel

Yes I know that the answer is probably here if I search hard enough, but life is too short :), so....

I have recently replaced the top centre panel on my '03, and noticed that as well as the push plate at the bottom, which open the cubby-hole, there is another 1/2way up which activates another lever which does ........... what? :?

And IIRC only for cars with manual roof, not manual override of automatic roof.

Thanks guys I suspected as much to both answers :)

Therefore un-necessary in my car, but cheaper for BMW to manufacture only the one panel! :roll:
