celtic tuning remap

anyone had a remap from celtic tuning or others, they quote around 30 bhp with de limit on the z4m s54, but i am a bit sceptical as people wh have changed exhausts, cams, pulleys etc are only getting equivalent gains to that. my friend has had one on his supercharged amg 55 merc they say 35 bhp increase but no dyno proof to back up claimed gains, any thoughts? :?

On boosted cars it's a simply change to increase the boost a tiny amount to get a decent wedge of HP and torque.

It's not so easy on a naturally-aspirated engine.

I tried various remaps/chips on my 3.8 M5 from people offering anywhere from 10bhp to 30bhp, and never got more than 5bhp - and that wasn't on top of peak power either, it just filled a tiny gap at about 4500rpm.

Be very wary of anywhere that claims the S54 only gives out 310-320bhp as standard, as the use this as proof that their remap has gained you 10-20bhp when they simply fiddled the before figures.

Any seat-of-the-pants performance increase you feel afterwards tends to be a placebo.

There are opportunities through the range with a simple remap for smoothing the delivery a little, but not at anywhere over 6500rpm, unless you're doing cams and removing VANOS for higher revs, or doing other mechanical changes.

Not even really worth it for the delimit in our cars either as you can exceed the electronic limiter by staying in 5th to about an indicated 170mph

I can vouch for this

that should be fast enough for me then, have'nt risked it past 130 yet, too scared of my license , thanks for confirming my thoughts re the remaps too. :driving:

There are good remapers out there that can get power out of a naturally aspirated S54 but it still wont be 30hp! Something like 15-20 at most. One of the most respected tuners is UK's Evolve Automotive. Give them a ring if you're interested. http://www.evolveautomotive.com/

What happens when you get to 170mph in 5th gear and then change up to 6th? Does the engine limiter cut out leaving you coasting? :o

It's a very gentle reduction in speed as the revs slowly drop off to leave you showing about 165mph on the clock (or 155mph on sat-nav). Don't know if it's purely down the the electronics, or due to the length of the 0.85:1 ratio in 6th compared to the 1:1 in 5th.

Although the time it takes to change from 5th to 6th at that speed means you lose a couple of MPH very quickly anyway and you can never get it back in 5th. Even on the autobahns you don't get that much time to really sustain those speeds as there's always someone pulling out about once every 5 minutes.

Mine might be slightly different than a car with OEM tyres on though, as the Michelin PSS rears are larger than OEM tyres by 1 or 2% , as I can hit 136mph at 7900rpm in 4th (showed about 145mph on the speedo) - according to Harry's Lap Timer the other week before braking for Aremberg * :P

There's no head-butting of the windscreen style limiter as there was on my e34 - which had the same idiosyncratic limiter in 6th, but not in 5th :P

* although it was damp (hence only a 9m lap on the 2nd of my first two laps of using Harry's Lap Timer - though I stopped timing after that as I know I would have just been stupid and tried for better & better times), I lifted before the crest of Schwedenkreuz, and didn't get into 5th as normal.

etc....

Thanks for that, very interesting.

Can you save your lap recordings with Harry's Lap timer? When you were at The Ring, were you able to do continuous laps, and if so, what was the Vmax you could get on the straight. The fastest that I've managed on the straight there in my Z3 MC (recorded by GPS) has been 143.5mph and that car has a rear wing which will increase drag somewhat but the car feels very stable at high speeds.

You can save & export them to different formats, but I've only transferred them between the recording device and my iPad. I've also got a dedicated external GPS receiver (Dual XGPS150 in 5hz mode) for quicker/more accurate speeds/references and an OBC dongle (GoPoint BT1) that communicates with Harry's Lap Timer.

The iPad version of the software Harry's Lap Timer Trainer Pro lets me view the lap in quite a bit of detail, and you zoom into the map of the track to get more info at different points of the lap.

It was Touristenfahrten, so had to go through the barriers after every lap - although did get to do the VLN circuit on the Friday evening - and that first hairpin at the end of the pit straight is a scary bugger when you hit it the first time.

You can also export the data to various other formats, from basic text (.csv) to Google Earth (.kml), to Circuit Tools (.vbo) formats - or even as a plot in PDF format.

That's excellent! As you'll have gathered, I love all that kind of stuff.
