CDV? good mod or bad mod

Those of you who did the dummy CDV mod and basically admitted you did the mod in this thread, just for caution, back in the Z4um days, BMWNA regularly monitored the forum and it wasn't abnormal for BMWNA reps to contact a member directly by phone (even though the member did not disclose his phone number on the forum) when the member posted about certain issues and problems with the Z4 that were unresolved. You'd be amazed how easy it was for BMWNA to find an owner's info with little information about the owner disclosed on the forum. I've heard of the same thing on other BMW forums as well.

So doing the dummy CDV mod and then publically admitting you have done it sort of defeats the purpose.

I see what you are saying, but dealers can easily check to see if this mod has been carried out, and would probably do this as a matter or routine if the problem was transmission related, just my feeling

I was talking about instances where the dummy/fake CDV's replace the original CDV's. If someone simply takes out the CDV and replaces it with, well, nothing, then the dealer can of course spot it right away.

GP20 you misunderstand me, I meant it wouldnt take the dealer 5 minutes to remove the CDV to see if it is a dummy or not, you would only need ot insert a 2.8mm drill bit so see if it fits thorugh.

Thanks for clearing it up. You're correct. My apologies.

so what does it do?? :driving:

It removes the restriction of the fluid flow. Bigger fluid flow = more direct release of the clutch (rather then delay - hence the name Clutch Delay Valve)

Does anyone in the UK suplpy these valves? I know I can buy one from a dealer and do the mod but I'd like to take the easy option if poss.

J.

I've always found that the easiest method is to remove your valve, shove a big drill through it, give it a clean stick it back on again and bleed the clutch. It takes 30 minutes tops and you don't have to buy a second CDV.

Here's my question...My z4 is my first manual car. So I basically learned on it and don't know anything else. Should I still do this mod?

Partially, if you are new to a manual (like me) transmission then you might still do that. I'm pretty sure mine was never changed though so I'm still not CDV mod. I'm still waiting to find a shop that will do it for me here as I'm too nervous (inexperienced) about working with the good ol fluids (bleeding the lines) to attempt to try it for myself.

Lol, you kidding me, I just got my licence done a couple of weeks ago... Im not a manual noob though, but some more feeling in the clutch would b great...

I loved the results of using the Zeckhausen CDV mod so much on my Z4 I did the same mod to my wife's X3. Delightful results for both cars. I have only been driving manual tranny cars for the last 42 years now so I am not sure if noob status fits in my case :D

^^ And you call yourself a "Mech", jeez what has the AF come to??? :poke:
LOL, ok, ya got me there. The difference being with the jet engines, I had some training and a very nice book to help me if I get stuck. The other part of it is, my luck I would do something wrong, then crash my car. I'd just prefer to let someone that deals with the stuff day in and day out do it. On the flip side, I have no jack and very little tools. Another tidbit is the fact that I did so much maintenance on the jet engines that I really didn't feel like picking up a wrench when I arrived home. Although, now I have switched jobs and am working behind a desk....so I may just take my car to the hobby shop and do this mod in the semi near future.
