CD Multi-changer problems

As I've said many times before, I'm strictly engines/airframes orientated, so electrickery loses me very quickly.
I'm sure there are experts on here who may be able to help though.

CD multi-changer not working properly.
1. Sometimes takes a couple of button presses, combined with a push on the cassette to eject it.
2. Goes back in smoothly, carrier thing on the right motors to the bottom, but it does not run through the checks of the CD drawers.
3. Occasionally selecting the 'mode' button on the head unit shows 'no magazine', other times it shows 'checking CDs' but it never does the check.
4. Can't get any further than that.

I have checked the connections and fuses. I have also tried disconnecting the cables for five minutes, just in case.

I will be breaking this car at the end of the month and would like to have a working unit to pass on to someone, so if you can help me sort it that would be great.

Failing that, if anyone wants to take it off my hands cheap and fix it themselves I'd be up for that too.

Had some strange issues like this with the CD changer. Some chap told me to give it a knock with something that wouldn't break the plastic. Strange advice but never bothered me again. Main issue was the cassette getting stuck. Can't test it anymore as I used the CD changer wires for my bluemusic module

It sounds like it has a sticky mechanical switch to decide if the cassette is loaded or not, or maybe an opto with gack on it.

It's one of those things I'd look at these days, shrug and ignore. CDs have become depressingly passé. I binned all the MP3 CDs I used in my E46 when the laser went blind and moved entirely to MP3 players via the aux. Then in a moment of clarity bought a large SD card for my phone.

The Zed CD laser was going daft when I bought the car, which never worried me. I actually had a play with the trim pots on it the other week which may well have cured it, but since I've got no home written discs left I can't be bothered to write a new one to test it.

Think of the changers removal and subsequent binning as a weight saving performance enhancement.

Out of curiousity, is there a way we can replace the CD changer with a storage bin?

Yes, you just need to source a storage bin and push it into place.
The rear console section needs to come out to access the CD changer and it's also easier if you remove the LH storage bin/speaker grille (depending on spec).
Take out the changer and the mounting bracketry too.
From bitter experience, you need to slot the replacement storage bit in before you refit the console as it is slightly too wide to pass it.

Sounds like quite some work, but i will definitely consider this, as my CD changer cables are preoccupied with the bluemusic module. Thanks!

About an hour or so, but fiddly with the seats in due to poor access.

Yes but be aware there are two types and they are slightly different in size. I have a storage bin somewhere as I fitted nav to my old zed, but it’s not the same size as the cd changer one.

Would it be part no. 51467043818 ?

I dont have navigation, already got a storage spot where the navigation disc reader would be

Put a Wanted ad up. I don’t have a spare but there’s a good chance umfaan, street or bigwinn will.
Failing that you can actually just carpet the space
