CCTV Cameras

So after the window smashing incident a couple of weeks ago, last night some little c**t(s) nicked the wheel trims off my GF's figaro, again sat on the drive.

Luckily they haven't done any damage to the rest of the car, & don't seem to have touched my Z (parked mere feet from the fig.) at all.

So I wanted to ask if anyone's got any recommendations for a decent CCTV camera? There's plenty on eBay, wifi ones look decent, just wondering if anyone's got any experiences with any in particular?

Siftah, I know you have a couple? Any good?

Needs to be outdoor & motion sensitive, not necessarily night vision as I want to put a security light up as well... Preferably want some kind of alarm when it's triggered too.

Any ideas?

I'll bore your pants off about this particular subject tommorrow, don't worry :)

Briefly: I've been using a piece of software called "Motion" on linux, which does great motion detection and can trigger emails with the video/images and do all sorts - it's even linked to my house alarm so it can set the house alarm off or do different things depending on whether I'm in the house or not.

To capture video I use infra-red cctv cameras (so they can see in the dark) and run them through a quad-input DVR card. That's about the cheapest way to do it and you can run them over longer distances than USB cameras. The IP cameras worked out a lot deared and the quality of the waterproofing etc on the cameras was never up to much.

I'll bore you with more details tommorrow though ;)

I have a SWANN SW111 which I can view from any PC with an internet connection. I can also view it from my mobile (Nokia E71) I have also set it up to alert me when it detects movement. It's a bugger to set up on network (i.e. messing about with ports, firewall etc) but not as much of a bugger as removing the Z4 vent! You can also attach a USB micro drive to it to save pics.

Is it really necessary to have CCTV fitted if you live in Manchester?

We do have quite high car crime here, reflected in our insurance policies. CCTV is certainly useful but it's not common.

It stopped my Motorbike getting stolen a few years back:

Did they find out there were cameras both outside and inside the garage (second video shows they were looking at the camera)?

I couldn't say really - they certainly spotted the one inside the garage as that's obvious from the video. They were never caught, so I suspect they didn't know the second one was there (it's quite well hidden).

My take on CCTV is that it's only any use if it's hidden and that it won't prevent crimes, just give the coppers a better chance of catching the burglars afterwards. If they know it's there they're just going to cover their faces and carry on, keep it hidden and they'll perhaps be caught out and there's a chance of giving the Police enough info to do them for the crime.

Wishful thinking probably :)

4 or 5 years ago I had stuff knicked from my garage (Bike stuff) ......... scrotes ......
I put the word out among the local yoofs that I was offering a grand, no questions asked, for the name(s) of the teabag(s) that did it.
2 days later, said stuff was back in my driveway - and nothing has been knicked since.
Cant say why it worked or what the theory is behind it ......
Car alarms / house alarms / security devices never seem to stop anynybody ..... how often do you hear an alarm but do nothing ?
Best of luck with CCTV ...... lol ..... hidden is best, if they see them they will likely knick them too .............

just did a search for cctv and found this old thread

sure things must have changed a lot since this original post, do we have any cctv experts on here?

I'm a CCTV consultant and previously installed for many years.

Youre welcome to send me a PM with details/ distances , etc and I'll tell you what you need by means of camera, lux, lenses, recording capacities, etc.

I may not be very good on these "out of the box" plug and play kits as we never use them. (Nothing worse than drilling 25mm holes everywhere just to get a pre-made plug end through and then have 10m spare cable you cant cut off !)

I've just got some cheap dlink internal motion cameras but am looking for an external camera system that records my drive / entrance.

I have a camera system at the moment but i don't use it. The reason being is 1/. Its noisy (the fan) and 2/. The picture quality is not very good

The reason i want/have the camera is the keep an eye on my zed. People turn around near my zed and i have had it bumped. The problem is that the reg details can not been clearly seen. So, I am now looking at upgrading the complete system but i have no idea whats available. An iternet system would be great - do they do them? Obviously its only for personal use so my budget is not massive

Cheers

er. pressed wrong button, that should have been a PM, good job it was not personal

I have 3 cameras installed and a 1TB hard drive, good for keeping a eye out, also get a app on your phone so you can keep your eye on the cars when your out, but if I am honest I wish I had spent more on the cameras as unless you know the person in the image you cant really make them out, all you can see is the top of there heads, I have dash camera in my car so I can keep a look out at ground level, much better, so you would be better getting one of these and sticking it in you front room window,
