Cayman R - Anyone driven one?

Im totally with Andy on this one...

The 996 turbo is an awesome machine.....And you getting away from using that crappy engine (M96) that was in most of the porsche range for a long time..Upto 2008 i think ?

I have driven a cayman....And i do like them,they have excellent poise,grip and handling..Bads points...uneventful and lacks pace IMHO..

And also has a gopping arse

The one i drove was a 3.4S though.

Compleatly agree with Z4M-2006 as above, my previous car was a 2006 cayman s. Z4MC looks far greater and is a much more sketchy drive, overall way more special feeling.

Looks Great

Always fancied a recession white one , with black wheels had a lovely for sale last year at Dick Lovetts but just a bit rich at the time coming in at 37k guessing there be pretty low levels of deprecation on these

The one we had at work was exactly as you describe. Sadly I deleted my only picture. I found it very similar to the Cayman R to drive. It was surprisingly civilised pootling around town. Effortlessly fast when needed and had a bonkers sec ion right at the top. The trouble is you could never get near that bonkers section on the road unless you really did not care about having a licence.

The GT3 is just so different in that respect. You feel like you are in a race car every time you get in the thing and it just feels like an angry car. I remember someone talking about a certain car and saying it's like riding a tiger. Well that's what the GT3 is like, like riding a tiger... with a thorn in it's paw. The others are like riding a well trained race horse.

Don't get me wrong the R and the Spyder are fantastic cars and i'd happily have either but to answer OGs question in some way (as I may be the only person here that has drive all 3). Despite having the same badge on the bonnet and track intentions they are not cars i would say are in a transitional area between a Z4MC and a GT3. However, they are still fantastic.

Thanks Mowflow and to everyone else who has expressed an opinion. I'm going to sort a drive out in one over the next couple of weeks but I think my heart is set on waiting another 12 months until I can get a 997 GT3.

I'm driving a 996 GT3 on track in a fortnight so that will give me a nice little reference point!

If you've driven a 997S it'll be the same performance as a 996GT3

They will probably feel different though due to the large difference in oily bits.

There is a noticeable difference between the 997 gen1 and gen2 GT3 in terms of drive mainly due to the gear ratios. I believe Porsche changed it to post a better ring time for the gen2. As a result the gen1 is actually a bit better for us mere mortals who may require to drive it round a busy Tesco car park every once in a while.

I've no experience of the 996 GT3 but have been a passanger in a 996 GT3 RS and it was utterly insane. You are going to have one hell of a day at that track day. It will require a thread with pics and videos.

Did some brief man maths myself - lose the RRS etc ...it even handles snow :!:

Yes I've been doing the man maths for a while now. I'm just hoping as the last of the non-PDK GT3's, the 997's don't start to appreciate just yet! :?
