Cayman 718 S

Had a 718 test day at Silverstone yesterday driving the Boxster S and the Cayman 718's and I have to say I was very impressed. They both go like stink and they have a deep throaty note with pops and banks on overrun when in sport mode (although you don't get the revving howl you get with the 6 cylinder)
Overall I really liked it, would I have one, Yes definitely. And for those purists that say it has to be a 6 cylinder, go and drive one rather than trying to be cool without experiencing it first hand.
JC, you will love it, and Miami Blue is way better than Lava Orange.

Hey thanks for the encouraging words :D . Having test driven both the 981 Cayman and a Boxster 718 (Cayman 718 hadn't been released when I placed my order) I must truthfully admit that nothing really matches the spine tingling howl of the 981 and it's power release in the upper end of its revs. I am pretty sure this has laid the foundations for the 981 to become a classic car that is 'last of its breed'.

 I did go for lava orange in the end (sorry!) to match my warm skin tones....

I am now punching out numbers to get the best finance deal. There's very little in it tbh. Gonna have to tighten the purse on beer :(

Oh well here's to a new Cayman in about two and a bit weeks :)

Cheers JC :D

Enjoy! Lava orange is a great colour. The 2.5 is a quick beast!
I recently went through a similar experience with a 718 Boxster but after adding all my extra's the price had escalated out of control.
What is you full option list btw?
In the end I managed to pick up a 2016 981S from Leeds OPC (their demonstrator) fully specc'd. This is from the last months of 981 production. I call it the black pearl :)
I even managed to haggle!

:D Firstly, your 981 S Boxster is gorgeous, what a ride 8) The Black Pearl indeed!

Yep, I know all about the options adding up  My 718 S option list is.....

H2 Lava Orange
AS Black Leather package with partial leather seats
636 ParkAssist (front and rear)
748 Electrically folding exterior mirrors including courtesy lighting
250 Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)
475 Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM)
QR5 Sport Chrono Package including mode switch
XLX Sports exhaust system (incl. sports tailpipes in black)
433 20-inch Carrera S wheels
XDG Wheels painted in Black (high-gloss)
P13 Automatically dimming mirrors with integrated rain sensor
858 GT sport steering wheel
489 Heated multifunction steering wheel
P06 Fully electric Sports seats (14-way, electric)
342 Seat heating
7UG Navigation Module for Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
9VL BOSE® surround sound-system
QV3 Digital radio

Apparently the engine was included in the base model price and was not an optional extra thankfully! So many of the above came as standard on my now sold 35iS.....

Well here's to being poorer :) just wish this delivery would hurry up before someone says 'we must adjust car pricing to take into account the decline in the value of the pound....' YIKES!

Cheers JC :D

Very good spec list!
I can add those options up in my head now after speccing' for weeks yes quite a cost!
The change in exchange rate had been a concern when I was considering new. Fingers crossed.
OPC had kindly specced full red dials and belts £1000 which I would never have stumped up for

Paid my deposit on a Cayman today. Not a huge spec.

Graphite Blue Metallic
Graphite Blue and Crayon full leather interior and sport tex
Sports Seats Plus
Heated Seats
20" Carerra Sport Wheels
PASM
Sports Tailpipes Chrome, might get full PSE, but the effect isn't as dramatic as the 6 cyl 981 so will wait to hear in person before committing.
Heated multifunction steering wheel.
Smoking package - should be standard as it finishes the centre console off nicely.
Passenger footwell storage net - simply as it's free.
Connect
Electric mirrors
Front and rear parking sensors
Other stuff I can't recall.

I think that's a good move with the PSE. See what you think when you here it and then decide.
Did you consider the PDK or the sport chrono options?

I've driven the PDK, but despite its technical brilliance, prefer the involvement and control of the manual. I drove both transmissions back to back and enjoyed the manual more. Sports Chrono is off the list too. I just like to drive in a single mode on the Z4 (sport mode) so will be doing the same with the Cayman. The rev matching would be the only useful thing for me. Plus I've ending up spending much more on the interior and Seats than I intended so need to be a bit more stingy in the options to stay within £10k of options that I set myself. I've been in two minds over the GT steering wheel as on one side it's the newer more desirable wheel and in the other its a bit naff and cheap feeling in the hand.

The stupidness of options on our cars is well founded.

Would you believe that there is an option of a courtesy light on the sun visors too....

Great, amazing cars of course, but why are they so tight on options. I nearly bought a Boxster with no heated seats or phone module...why would people wrongly spec a car like that? Dealer told me re the phone, some people want a pure sports car with no distractions of a phone!!

There are always the flimpers of this world ....

I did think the new wheel was a bit fussy, too many screws.....however the sport toggle was very cool!

You can get the sports chrono dial on the standard wheel, too. Oddly despite this wheel being based on the 918 Spyder wheel the dark and metal bits are the other way round, which looks better on the, too. My other gripe is that the plastic spokes of the GT wheel are made of the cheapest rattly plastic imaginable :)

Not a photo, just the configurator, the standard wheel with multifuntion, which I've gone for looks like this (minus the chrono dial):

No leather?

It's a full leather interior with Sport-Tex inserts on the seats, but not really identifiable as such in the CG image from the configurator tbh. A bit clearer in this photo, you can see the deviated stitching on the dash etc. It's a new interior type that was launched with the Cayman and now available on the Boxster. Can only have it with the Sport Seats Plus, though.

Always a nice touch that in the Porsche, you can open the side pockets to put stuff in and close it again rather than trying to squeeze your hands in there.

I like that interior though, and re resale - as long as it is not flimper, it will go fine no matter what the colour scheme. Did you ever see those gash red interiors?

Nice contrasting seat spec like it!
Yes the PDK choice is difficult when the 6 speed manual is so superb but it offers so many choices that I couldn't resist

Fortunately everyone I've shown that interior to likes it. Hopefully that'll be true in a few years time. I'm not getting the Nav, which might be a bit flimpery, opting for apple car play instead.
