Cautionary tale

Hi all. Wish someone had warned me that BMW can't guarantee that their cars are water tight. Just posted the following tale of woe on the comprehensive faults thread but I am also looking for some advice on how I might pursue a complaint against the dealer for replacing a part I don't believe needed to be replaced.

1. E89 sDrive 23i
2. 2010/60
3. White
4. Red

2016 (May)

5a. Roof opened half way and then stopped and would neither open or close.
5d. Resolved (but not to my satisfaction – see below)
5c. Total bill/cost to me £2038 New hydraulic unit and wiring/hydraulic line harness. New boot seal and vents.
5d. Problem caused by water ingress through boot seals. First video from service department showed external corrosion of hydraulic unit and severe corrosion of an electrical connector block. Second video showed that hydraulic unit had been replaced and explained that the connector was not available separately and would require the supply of a complete wiring/hydraulic harness in order to obtain the connector to splice into my harness. I asked for the replaced items to be returned to me. On checking the hydro unit it certainly showed some external corrosion but on removing the outer cover of the motor it was obvious that there had been no significant water ingress and on connecting a power supply the motor worked perfectly. It is obvious that they could not have tested the unit as they had already replaced it before repairing the corroded connector. I am really annoyed that they have replaced a very expensive part without checking if it was serviceable or not. I spoke to the Service Manager who, when he realised they had replaced the part without testing the old one, fobbed me off with “it's our experience that they fail eventually if they have come into contact with water” ignoring the pictures I sent him showing that no water had got into the unit.

Don't really help with the dealership but perhaps get you some good will payment from BMW :?

Seems like BMW haven't learnt anything about roof motor placement in all these years if they are still failing due to water ingress.

Good luck with your claim.

Standard practice with BMW dealers isn't it? They are not in the business of testing parts and checking if they can be fixed. Their default practice is just to replace parts. If you're out of BMW warranty I would suggest taking the car to a specialist in future thereby avoiding being shafted.
Worth an email to BMW UK perhaps as has been said, but I wouldn't hold out for much hope.

Don't email use twitter to complain and try to make sure it gets well circulated.

Emails can be ignored and the sender fobbed off but they don't like being critisised on twitter.
Good luck

This prompted me to have a look at my boot floor. No signs of any water ingress thankfully.
TBH I wouldn't trust a dealer with an older car, they will replace things rather than test and then you have to argue about the cost. E89 roof problems seem mostly to be with failed sensors, they don't suffer the same motor failures due to watelogging the early e85s did.
Use a good Indy in future but I would still raise hell with the dealer for replacing a serviceable part.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will try the softly softly approach with BMW UK first and if that doesn't work I'll go public via twitter. I'll let you all know how I get on.

It's my wife's car, shes had it a long time now and doesn't want to get rid just yet. Take the point about indies, anyone know of a good one in Edinburgh/southeast Scotland?

Cheers
Bill
