Catching on rear arches

So, on todays drive I have for the first time given the Zed bit of a workout.

The off side rear is catching on the arch, I am guessing the has been happening for some time as the liner is slightly damaged.

The wheel/tyres are 255/40/18 with new Vredestein Ultrac Vorti.

The wheel wing gap is about 10mm offside and 20mm nearside.

I am guessing perhaps a broken spring and maybe lowered?

3.0si E86 auto.

any suggestions would be appreciated

Seems odd having such a difference between the off-side and near-side. Have you checked if for some reason there is a wheel spacer only on one side?
I've had broken springs in mine, but that didn't attribute to any wear... But could well be a mixture of springs and shocks? If they're original the compression isn't going to be what it should be.
I'd also throw into the mix, are you sure the damage is being caused by the 18" alloys? It may well have been a previous owner was running 19" wheels?
 
My questions/comments would be:
  • Wider taller than standard rear tyres (standard is 255/35r18)
  • Standard or aftermarket wheels?
  • Lowered?
  • Condition of springs?
  • Condition of struts?
  • Condition of bushes/mounts?
  • Spacers?
  • ...and in my case after a little accident, bent rear trailing arm?
 
The higher profile on the tyre could be contributing. The 255 width is standard.
Maybe the bump stops are worn or have been butchered in order to lower the car on stock dampers?

That's how I read it the first time too, but I think he's saying that the car is at different heights on each rear corner (i.e. we're talking ride heights and not offsets).

It had 40 profile on when I purchased so replaced with the same, the fronts are 45 section. These have just been replaced too..

The measuremeant is the gap between the top of the tyre and the bottom of the arch.

Going from 35 to 40 profile adds 25 mm to the diameter. I guess that explains it.

I have now looked into things bit more, I have style 224 wheels, so the fitment is correct for the wheel, I think!

I think I will swop the springs anyway, assuming they are original, they are probably due. Any standard height recommendations?

Bit of a bummer because I had ordered 35 profile and the garage said they should be 40's as they were fitted. I paid an extra £80.00 for the change.

It does look good with the additional tyre wall rubber.

Wow, i didn't realise it was such a big difference. That might be the issue.
Its a pity, the higher profile probably improves the ride a little.
 
The fitment is correct for the wheels if you have an M, but if you don’t then you should really have 35 rear, 40 front. They go on just fine. That said, people have run M sizes on non M cars so I’d also be checking springs/shocks. Maybe it’s been lowered ?
 
I think new springs may be the route, does not seem a stupidly expensive job if it doesn't achieve anything.

Can anyone confirm if these are the correct springs. Seems to be many options available!

If you are doing the springs you should do the struts while you are there. If your budget allows, a full suspension refresh changes the car.
