Catalytic Converter woes - 2003 3.0i Z4

Hey everyone, I'm new to this forum and new to owning a Z4. I recently posted an introduction thread where i mentioned my service engine light just came on, and also mentioned a slight rattle I've been noticing around 1800 to 2000 rpms.

My mechanic figured out what it was, and unfortunately it's not very nice. The catalytic converter (one of them, I didn't realize we had 2) is breaking apart into the muffler, which is causing the rattle. He says it's not hurting anything to drive on it. There is a chance it could clog up the muffler, but if it did would only affect the performance of the vehicle. Right before I took it into the mechanic, the service engine light switched off. he informed me it may continue to come on and off, until it breaks apart entirely.

So luckily I don't think I need to get it fixed immediately; I'm not due for a smog for a long time, and good thing too because he quoted me about 1700 dollars! This has got to be possible to do for cheaper, right? He said 6 hours to completely remove and replace one of the catalytic converters (and while he's at it cleaning out the pipes for the muffler to fix the rattling) and 900 bucks for the parts from BMW, which I believe is only the catalytic converter and some gaskets. There has got to be a place I can get a CC for cheaper than that, right? I would appreciate any links, information, or advice on this matter, it means a lot to me :) Meanwhile, I'm searching for this part online, but so far no luck :(
