Hi all, seems like my problems have gotten worse zed wise, indy diagnosed a faulty cat :( i dont know how much longer i can love/keep this car,i had no where near as many problems on my e46 with twice as many miles and twice the age

Your engine light has been dogging you for a while, guessing that once you fix it, that will be it and the car will be reliable. What are they suggesting as the replacement cost?

Might be worth sourcing your own part from a breakers yard. I'm sure there must be a few 2.0i zeds kicking around with a working cat?

Edit - Stuart beat me to it

I said that to my indy,he said it wasnt worth it as i could have the same problem,i rang Quarry and FAB anyway-they didnt have any in.

Whilst the indy isnt wrong, I suspect he'll be keen to make a sale, and get the added margin on the cat...

I hear you,is there an online site that i can input z4 cat and get a nationwide database of parts?-i seem to remember seeing one?

Ouch feel for you

I'm sure your indi is up to scratch but it would be worth asking about the diagnosis, in particular what cat' fault codes were present, and importantly any other fault codes in the history particularly relating to fuel/air systems. Cat's should last a min of 100k miles or 7+ years if they go before this there will be a reason, beyond physical damage or misfuelling common causes are relatively insignificant air/fuel/ignition or cooling system problems which can be masked by engine management which tries to keep things running sweet, in the meantime the Cat' is corrupted with unburnt fuel, carbon or pollutants.

So if you have been having any lights or fault codes they may not have been instigated by the Cat', rather the underlying problem may have damaged the Cat. It's certainly worth discussing and researching the codes before sticking a new cat' on.

I only got 'geeked up' up on cat's when my daughters car needed one at four years/35k miles, a bit of research beyond the "nah mate it's readings are out, nothing you can do that'l be four hundred quid plus" diagnosis, and I established the (citroen) cat was prone to leaking on a seam, which I got welded for a few quid and all is now well. So it's worth checking.

Sorry to hear this mate. Condolences don't help but looks like good advice from those more knowledgeable above. Hope you sort it cheaply............
