Absolutely shocking scenes in Catalonia with the Spanish cops being far too heavy handed.
Men, woman, young and old being beaten with batons, kicked, punched, dragged by the hair and shot with rubber balls.
I can only imagine that this is how the German SS conducted themselves.
Why would the Catalonians want to stay part of Spain after being treated like that.
Whether they are right or wrong to want a vote for independence they should not be assaulted for it.
 
There’s know way you can condone that sort of violence .The people who organised this referendum knew they were breaking the law and it would cause trouble ,they called the bluff of the government .They deserve to be locked up,in some countries they would be charged with treason and all that implies.

Is it so different to the scots having their independence referendum recently? It should have been a peaceful event & police brutality shouldn't have shown its ugly face imho :x

But yes, horrible scenes, firefighters acting as a barrier between the police and civilians, not a promising sight
 
Belgium next from what I see.

Difference with Spain is that they don't want to lose Catalonia as that contributes so much to the overal country.
 
Catalonia going is akin to the English having a referendum and deciding to go. By far the most afluent state and whose revenues prop up the rest.
It's interesting how relatively quiet our government and the EU have been when it comes to condemning the violence. Can't think why......😂
If this happened outside of Europe they be up in arms

Spain has a history of violent dictatorships, a la Franco and his pals. A little police/military violence is to be expected in a place that is barely hanging on to its existence.
A few too many years ago our province of Quebec elected a Separatist provincial Government, had referendums and votes and wanted to be free of Canada. A lot of us non french speaking folks here said "Let them go" ( we were volunteering to dig a moat and build a wall). They only wanted Canada to pay off their share of the National debt and ... and seeing as they couldn't support themselves we were to keep on sending them money (Transfer Payments etc). When we said "NO ! That's not the way it works" they seemed to have a major change in ideology regarding separatism from Canada, hence they are still here.

I'm sure saner minds will prevail eventually in Spain.
