Cataclean - Is it worth it ?

On my 2nd 3.0Si I got an Amber EML with fault codes for post-cat O2 sensor readings on both banks at 80K. My local Indy had been given some promotional bottles of Cataclean so after clearing the codes it got dosed and was OK for a few months.
Amber EML reappeared with same codes but while diagnostics were being run the battery died. Anyway new battery, codes cleared, more Cataclean and all good for 3 years.
But it was impossible to tell whether Cataclean cured a Cat issue, or whether it was one of those random problems BMWs are known for when the battery is on its last legs!
I wouldn't use it routinely but if I had a possible Cat issue I'd give it a try - new Cats aren't cheap.

Whether it actually cleans anything (as shown in the very impressive 3D animation on their website) is moot; it is a mixture of chemicals that change the composition of the fuel in the tank (they recommend the treatment on about quarter of a tank). This "modified" fuel will burn cleaner than ordinary fuel. Not because it has "cleaned the system", but because effectively it is a different fuel.
It's very good if your car just scrapes through the MOT on emmission levels. The modified fuel burns cleaner and this is shown on the MOT test. Put it into a low fuel tank the day before. Did it every year on my Jag V8 (which had been marginal) and it always passed.
Be aware that the product in the container is exactly the same, whether labelled "petrol", "diesel" or "motorcycle".
But claims that it "cleans" everything, including cats, DPFs, etc, etc, are just that: claims.
