Cat-D Z4M - stay clear?

Wherever you look you will get slight variations on definitions with many coming from salvage companies and those interested in shading the categories in their favour (sellers, salvage companies, auctions, etc.)

So the best to go direct to the ABI who issued the code and see the full code here:
http://www.abi.org.uk/Information/Consumers/General/595.pdf

An extract for Cat D is (cut, paste and format. not my words):
REPAIRABLE total loss vehicles where repair costs including VAT do not exceed the vehicle’s PAV. (Pre Accident Value)

The PDF contains a flow chart for insurers that clearly shows only 2 reasons to categorise as D: for which it must first satisfy:

Is the damage sufficiently severe to warrant settlement on a total loss, constructive total loss or vehicle replacement basis in accordance with the code? -YES
Then - Can/should the vehicle be repaired? YES
Then - Does the cost of repair exceed the PAV? if 'NO'

It can then become a Cat D if:
1) Vehicles replaced under “new for old” schemes (say, 60% damage) which would not otherwise have been treated as total losses.
2) Constructive total losses.

Pretty restrictive category

cj10jeeper, interesting info

I wish someone would ring up about this car and find out the truth - parking dent or re-shell.

What do they go down as if they are stolen, paid out, and then recovered later? (sorry, link doesn't seem to want to let me access the PDF to check myself ;) )

I guess it's best to get some decent pics of the accident damage and be able to get an idea of the damage etc, and who sorted it out as well.

Ie, Lucy's example would put me at ease because you can see what happened, what was fixed, who did it etc, and it's all honest. That info is more valuable really, than the Cat grading... maybe!?

Cheers

Dave

Recovered stolen vehicles which are in a total loss condition must be categorised A, B, C or D as
appropriate.
Recovered stolen vehicles that are undamaged, or with only minor damage, must be notified to MIAFTR
as recovered. The record must not be deleted.
Any changes in a total loss category must be notified to MIAFTR as soon as reasonably practicable on
re-classification.

Not sure why the link is not working - does for me?

Well a stolen paid out and recovered woudl just become the property of the insurance company and sold without any category rating. If it were also damaged then I subject to the amount the insurance could classify it as a write off and give it a 'C' Seems to me though that they woudl not do that unless there was significant damage else they are just devaluing their own asset.

Anyway I'd love to hear the story behind this car and see the what, why how behind it, rahter than speculate.

Wrong. It is automatically flagged up as a CAT D if "stolen recovered" then subsequently offered for sale!!! Why do you idiots constantly mislead lazy people. A simple "Google"on "UK insurance categories" would make everything clear. :headbang:

SittingBull - you really are the idiot making unsubstantiated claims and insulting people when all that's done is a post referencing the official guide and section transcripts.
Take a look at the code and you'll see that such stolen undamaged are specifically excluded from the code at the first Yes/No decision point.

You really should not believe all you read on Google or at least not post it without substantiating it.
