Castrol engine oil to suit bmw engines?

I am reading a BMW magazine atm and they suggest there are castrol lubricants engineered specifically for BMW engines. Is this any Castrol from the shelf or the ones from the BMW dealers are made differently?

The truth is that castrol engineers cloned synthetic dinosaurs to get a specific grade of synthetic motor oil for our beloved BMW's.

Don't believe a word of it. I have been using Mobil 1 every 5000 miles for my old Z4 and now my new one. Use the proper grade oa synthetic and all is well. IMHO that is.

Yeah... I had my car serviced yesterday with some unkown brand engine oil... was 5w 40 fully synthetic though, so I'm happy with it.

In my previous Z4 I used Mobil-1 5w30

In the M you have to use Castrol TWS 10w60 from the dealer or bye bye engine warranty :D
the 10w60 costs anything from 8.95 a liter to 12.95 a liter depending on what dealer you buy from,

Thankfully my dealer charges $8.95 so I don't feel ripped off,

I have castrol edge fully syntheic which meets the bmw requirements, so far I have yet to open the bottle - despite being told the 3.0 likes a bit of oil it hasn't used much at all if any!

BMW's synthetic is a special 5w30 based on Castrol Syntec, but with a special additive package. You can use any synthetic that meest BMW's specs, but at $5.40/quart, the BMW oil is a pretty good deal.

In the uk you would find that the main dealers are selling all different brands - for instance the one near southend does not sell castrol but will try to flog you some mobil at extortionate prices

Not exaclty true, if thats what your dealer is stating then he has to provide that specific oil "free", any synthetic meeting the specifications of Castrol TWS 10w60 can be used, its not rocket science its only motor oil  I use Mobil1 in both the Z4 and E55, synthetic of course, but because i can get it almost anywhere and at a good price

They do provide it free, Once a year,

and the Castrol TWS is the only oil I know of thats a 10w60 thats BMW specifications,
Mobil-1 does not provide a 10w60, and to be honest I don't know of any brand in the US with a 10w60,
Ive read on many websites only to use the BMW oil, and the dealer also told me all M's use the 10w60, If you know of an oil please let me know!

To spend all that money on the car and try to skimp a few $$'s for oil seems odd

I think you missed the point. Its not about skimping a few dollars, I service both my Z4 and the E55 per the requirements, the point i was making is that many dealerships (or some) tend to scare folks into thinking that only the BMW brand oil (or mercecdes which recommends Mobil1) that they stock can be used, and that is not true and is illegal. Mobil1 happens to make a synthetic 5w-30 (Z4) and 0w-40 (E55) for my cars and i can get it locally at a reasonable price so thats what i use and its easier for me maintaining 2 vehicles. But i would not be opposed to using Castrol, Amsoil, Royal purple, etc., if they were easily available to me too. Sorry never researched 10w60 oils
