Castle Combe - Performance Car Action Day 24-04-2010

http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/events/display_event.asp?EventID=259

A fantastic day out with lots of cars on show and and open track! (session available to be booked).

if there is enough interest from Z4-Forum i will put in a stand application, if there is little interest i may merge us with FiatForum.

if interest is very high i can also arrange a Z4-Forum ONLY track session, feel a bit safer on the track with people you know!

I've attended this event for the last few years and i love it, if like me you hate just looking at cars then this may be the even for you, it has good oppertunity to get involved in the action yourself and good viewing for those who want to watch.

here is a little taster for anyone interested ;)

would be interested inthe z4 only run as im worried of the insurance issues and would feel safer with u guys

Thats fine, incase it wasnt clear on the first post, there is the option to attend only as a club and have a stand.

if we want a club only track session i think we need around 25+ cars.

Nice, Bulldog... sort of share Paddy's sentiments, would be great if we could get our own stand!

If there's interest from as far afield as South Yorkshire you may get the numbers needed. Would be great to get 25 of us together :driving:

To help people make a decide, any idea on cost, track time and when you need to know by?

If there are the numbers I'd certainly be interested

Sure, i should of thought to add it myself

- Entry will be FREE if you are on the stand.
- track time is usually £25 in advance (£35 on the day) for 15minute session (usually a limited number of early bird session available for £20)
- you will need a long sleeve top and trousers/jeans
- helmets are required, these can be hired for £5/hour or you can bring your own

kinda covered the basics, i will add any more information i get from CC as and when :)

This really is a great day out for everyone, there is a good chance to see Exotica, Saloon class race cars and many other interesting & high performance cars. At the last event in september there was a Zonda, Lambo's, Ferrari's, lots of Caterhams, Aston Martin's and a whole host of crazy fast cars built in a shed (including mine ;)).

In the video i have linked to, when the orange Evo passes me, i'm already past 110mph and accelerating upto 130-135 to Avon Rise!

I'm in for the club stand but still a little uneasy about tracking the car!

Really enjoyed erm, Japfest at Combe so should be a good day out.

I'm confused. How come some track days I've seen are 130 pounds, but this one your saying it's around 30 pounds?
Or is it 30 pounds per 15 minute session and then add up the sessions you want to do?

I'm interested in this, but seems it's taking me a little longer to get the car squared away then I planned.

you buy 15 minute sessions, i usually do 3 which makes the day run quite well and gives a good chance to check everything else out that is going on around between sessions.

I'd be interested in this day if something was organised for a club stand... would probably take a session or two on track also :)

more to do?

its a mix between a show event and a track event, lots of cars to look at (hundreds of them) and good viewing area's for the track.

standing at quarry and watching the M3 drivers crash is entertaining, not sure why but always seems to be M3's?

with the exception of this Z4:

food is available from catering vans and the canteen onsite, there is usually a mobile rolling road, show girls and tuning houses showing off some really high performance cars.

if your not much of a petrol head and dont like socialising then no, there isnt really much to do

Ry

EDIT: if you ask nicely someone might take you out as a passenger. Passenger sign on is £5, or free if you are a driver.

That's usually due to drivers trying to turn when the car's too light - or trying to brake over the rise. Before or after, never ON :P

Although to be honest, I've been off at Quarry (once), although I kept my foot in and rode it out staying about 1ft away from the tyre wall.

I've even seen a Porsche GT3 hit another (much slower) car on the rise and roll & flip over the catch fence. If it hadn't been for the integral roll-cage in the GT3 then there would have been fatalities.

I'd also recommend getting some insurance cover - as it's not necessarily how much damage you may cause, but how much damage someone else can cause you.

There's usually plenty of 'action' at these events...and is one of the reasons I stopped attending 'magazine' events - just do a seatch on youtube for 'castle combe action day'.

Here's one showing how busy they can be...

They are lots of fun though, and can be very addictive

Was this event affiliated with the magazine 'Performance Car' that looks like it's gone into administration?

Yeah i could be up for this.

Are the FCCUK lot going Bulldog?

FCCUK dont usually attend as a club, Leighton (Flea) is usually there with the sEnny and sometimes the Coupe but dont often see anyone else.

not that i'm aware of, certainly never see anything to suggest it is while at the events.

last year AJEC performance got in on it and i think thats going to be the case this year aswell.

i fixed the Marea today and gave it a little run to get the surface rust off of the discs, god i miss boost so much.

Ya'' are making me scared to go to this track with all the crash videos. I'm no stranger to track days, but I've done em in the states. Is there a class system/run groups set up for these? Run group as in novices with novices, experts with experts?

What's up with that corner? It doesn't seem that tough of one, yet everyone crashes on it.

It's mainly because of the bit of track before it called Folly (a small kink done at high speed) followed by an uphill braking zone called Avon Rise, which is then followed by this 140º right turn.

Unfortunately, if you don't get enough braking done up Avon Rise, you tend to be trying to steer while still braking over the crest which makes the car go very light and off-line, and that's when people panic and press the brake harder instead of trying to get the car balanced for the corner.

It can also be quite greasy.

The only problems you get elsewhere are people flying through the chicanes when they either outbrake themselves (blaming brake fade), when someone drops some fluid (been behind a 400bhp Maestro Turbo at 130mph when that happened near Avon Rise and luckily ended up in the corn & not the tyres), when it's wet and someone aquaplanes off at Hammerdown, or when someone tries to over-correct a slide into the corn at Camp, only to be spat out into the concrete pit wall.

In the video below - not a crash, just a few laps of the circuit - if you start at 1:24 (crossing the start line), you'll be going through Folly (next to the Golf @ 1:30), at 1:36-1:40 you're onto Avon Rise (which can be awkward if you're on the wrong line after overtaking someone on the approach as you have to come from one side of the track to the other for the following corner), quickly followed @ 1:41 by Quarry. Farm Straight (1:48), Old Paddock Bend (2:05), Hammerdown (2:13) to Tower (2:17) and Tower (2:20) to Camp Corner (2:43) used to be VERY fast, but they were changed in the early 90's to reduce the average speeds, so now they're interrupted by The Esses (1:49) and Bobbies (2:27) chicanes respectively.
