Carver/DSP/ 10 speaker sound quality?

The carver system isnt that bad for a stock setup but I always felt the subs behind the seats would have been more useful is they tuned them a bit higher to include some bass like in the footwell. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but in the summer with the roof off I have been driving along and thought wow listen to the power of the bottom end... chest thumping indeed. Only to play the same track again a different day and it not sound the same with a lack of thump.

I have never really investigated fully but either there is an intermittent problem with my amp and the subs shut off now and again OR the car knows when the roof is down and cranks up the sub (dont think this is the case) OR the air pressure inside the car at a given speed increases the perceived level of sub (Most likely) OR my mind is playing tricks on me.

One of those... but it has driven me mad for years. I did whip the covers off once and the sub drivers were moving even though there wasnt that much bottom end that particular day. I think its down to the acoustics rather than a fault you would think the sub/bass would be best with the roof up but every time I have been impressed has been roof down and upwards of 30mph.

Fully agree with this, always sounds better with the roof down! Shame it makes us look like a Barry when doing so...

I concur, better bass with roof down, allowing for the fact the highs are washed out by wind and road noise, but the bass is great. (I have a Carver/DSP system) Roof up, bass is boomy and sloppy, not that impressive. Since a few have now observed this, I wonder if the system was intentionally designed for roof down playback? That's really the only way I drive the car anyway. I have a different car for top up weather, so it works for me.

I am aware of the Barry look, I have the volume cranked up on the highway, and am always turning it way down every time I come into a town.

it should really be exactly the opposite, i wonder if the amp/module knows the roof is down and adjusts something

Something else I have noticed too is the aux input is no where near the quality of a cd no matter what you are feeding it (iPhone with lossless tracks) after months of using aux i popped in a cd and it sounded punchy and crisp. I suspect the aux in is a bad preamp so might have to replace the cd changed with one of those kits you can buy like a dension.

Try the standard "6" speaker version,the word dreadful springs to mind especially the rear midrange jobs which I disconnected after fitting new ones in the cubby holes.

I also have the dsp system and think it sounds amazing although it seems best set to jazz club! And obviously using uncompressed music to get the best out of it.
