Carrera 4S in the snow!!

enfield

Veteran
Ladies & gentlemen,
As some of you already know I am very fickle when it comes to cars (and according to Caddyshk women too) and have been giving some deep thought to getting rid of both the BMW and the Infiniti in 2009. I am plotting to order a CArrera 4S for June 2009 with European Delivery. I have been concerned about snow and the 4S. the 4S is a beast and can handle snow well with AWD and winter tires but it has limited ground clearence.

We get >10cm of snow 4-6 times a year and 2 of those times the snow is >25cm. I looked into it and found:

I PM'ed the original author and he told me that he easily battled 10 inches (aka 25.4cm) of snow in Boston on December 13th 2007.

So - now I want to hear your thoughs on my plans i.e. having the Carrera 4S as my only car in Southern Ontario. I am aware of the fact that I may damage the front lip over a 3 year lease but getting that replaced will be cheaper than maintaining my Infiniti as a second car between insurance cost as well as upkeep. I do not care about rust in 6-7 years because I will be leasing for 3 years (it makes some business sense too because I am self employed and I can write of part of the costs.)

Please share your thoughs. I would love input from Europe because I know there are many Carrera's driving around in Bavaria over the winter.

I think SilverBullet nailed the answer I would have given. As much as I think you can do it with the Carrera 4S, I'd rather trade the FX for a beater truck for the winter. But then again, you're going to be leasing it. So you don't need to have the same level of sense-of-ownership as those who don't lease. You just need to have the car in decent working order.

Beater truck for me.

Still though enfield, will you be penalized at all at the end of your lease if there is too much damage? Even if not, or if it's worth it to you even if you do, I don't see where it's a big deal for you to have a winter beater. Hell, it doesn't have to be top-of-the-line. Just get you something 4WD and reasonably dependable. It never hurts to have two vehicles. I know I'm glad I've got my truck, even though our circumstances are quite different, everyone can use a 2nd vehicle at some point - particularly when you drive a sports car.

By the way, I read all your links and the car sounds outstanding. God, you will be so smitten - don't forget us Z4 trash when you switch!

Go for it!

$113K CDN

$89K US

You may want to consider purchase vs. lease before the Feds shut down X-Border Auto shopping.

BTW - When there's + 20cm on the roads, we're encouraged to stay off them by Ontario's finest...

We'll miss you on cruises and forums however - I guess you'll ultimately develop a whole new group of Porsche friends :poke:

I'd definitely go the same way as SilverBullet; get a C2S & keep the FX.

You guys make good points.... I guess I will hang on to the FX45. No point in buying a winter beater when I already have one but this time I will put snows on the Carrera and use it every day except when the snow is deep. Might as well go Carrera S and not bother with the 4S if I do this.

Or I may be a devil & mess with the 4S

Caddy - won't you still let me show up for cruises?? I won't be able to keep up but still....

fni - I will always be around on this forum kust like wondermike. I may not have a Z4 beyond next year but I will always have the Z4 spirit. I really do not care too much about damage to the Porsche from snow.

Yeah, I too would keep the FX. The 4S has a wider butt so it looks a bit better than the 2.

O/T but we're getting the FX35 in the UK this year.

Not interested in the Targa. It is heavier and I then have a car that has the same 0-60 as my current one....

Wondermike, would love to hear what Clarkson has to say about the FX35

Actually it's not the FX we're getting, it's the EX35 instead

Hmm AWD starting from $32,700 in the US...and starting from £35,000 in the UK. They must have made a mistake in the currency calculations  So no, Clarkson won't like it at that kind of money.

^^^ Gosh it's fugly!

Going to the Porsche issue again (please forgive me) I just found out the the Audi S4 Quattro has a clearence of 3.7 inches. The Porsche isn't bad at 3.7 inches (too) me thinks :D - I know people who drive S4's here through the winter. I think I may become a one car man with a Carrera 4S on lease
