Just found this post on E46fanatics whilst looking for some info for a fellow Z4 member.

Might have to look into this CarPuter a bit more

I have been researching this for the last six months. I plan on doing something like this to the new Zed....
But mines going to be touch screen....

Only real issue as I see it is where to put the PC, dont realyy want to fill the boot/trunk, but maybe under the passanger seat.

Hmmmmm I like that a lot.

Makes me wonder a little, as I bought an Intravee / KCA / Ipod and reckon I could have found a reasonable PC for less money, do you have a link to a thread on the interface?

Presume you need the Video module for that too, (I have one here in a box..). I'm going to start searching.

On a side note, I've just bought a Samsung NC10 Netbook (£290) and love it.. you could almost remove the screen and mount one under the passenger seat or on the boot wall and would take up less space than a CD changer..

Damn it... I haven't finished the projects I was working on before and you show me this ?

Could you not mound something like this into the dash?

But then lose all your integration..

There's plenty of ways of sticking a CarPC in, but that one above acts like the Intravee does, which is what's exciting.

OK, thank srhutch.. so it's a CIS-BUS interface..

199 euros, doesn't need a TV Module.

Eeek. The plot thickens.. wish I'd known about this a month or so ago.

Seems you can do a lot with this, as I'm that way inclined already the possibilities are endless..

Imagine a CarPC that syncs every time it gets within range of your house.. that allows you inet access as you drive, that provides a wifi hotspot for phones / ipods / laptops / whatever for passengers as they drive..

I'm going to have to buy one of those cis-ibus thingies and plug in a PC to test. If it's any good, I'll build something dedicated that will also then go into my next car, hopefully..

I'm very interested in this...its difficult to tell how the CIS-BUS attaches the video, presumably the USB/Serial to IBUS part could hook into the CD changed IBUS port, but I'm guessing IBUS doesnt carry video, so there's a second output on the CIS-BUS that carries video to the Nav Unit ??

I notice that the CIS-BUS guys have ready to rock CarPC's too, which could simplify any issues with cooling/cases etc...

I've fitted an AUX thinking even the Intravee wasn't really good enough for what I wanted, but now I've seen this option, well, its the ultimate upgrade for the Nav... loads of music, ability to play movies/videos, etc.. Very interesting.

Its hard to find anyone online that's got a blow by blow, so I'm guessing this could be a bit trial and error...

I was already looking to get the interface before I stumbled on the carputer again, seen them before, but that was before I had Nav so wasnt much use in the Z4.

The interface can be bought here http://www.reslers.de/IBUS/index.html

for 36 euros (RS232) and 46 euros (USB)

The main reason I was going to get one was so I can program my telematics display as mine says I am driving a mini cooper

Can also program Daytime running lights etc though it with a bit of free software will post details fo that when I can find again.

Presumably though, the cheap IBUS only interface is for all but video? i.e. music/other functions. The CIS-BUS carries the IBUS connectivity but also video (at a premium clearly), but how cool is it to be able to play video for the passenger, or while sat in the car waiting etc... would also be interested if the video switch could be engaged for internet browsing via a bluetooth keyboard for example? hmmm, options options...

I'd be interested if it could be made seamless and being removable without any damage come resale.

I'd also be interested in on with an SSD instead of a spinning HD, as it would be faster and use less power. I'd be able to plug my pornfilm collection into it!

yep was thinking about an ssd too, altho they're quite expensive for any decent size..

their interface definitely is the trick with the video. looks like it interfaces nicely with the steering wheel controls too.. I'm tempted to just order one and run it from my lappy to test.. im sure id be able to sell it on for similar money with the right ad.

I'm sure I've seen a Mac Mini used as a carputer/carpc, but I don't think that was connected to the ibus/cis-ibus of a modern BMW.

Although if a cheap netbook works it would be simple enough to have a socket to connect it to, and have it in a padded first aid box under the seat. Would a netbook be powerfull enough to run AVIs/DIVXs at a good quality/rate though?

yep.. i wondered that, but this samsung nc10 im on now works brilliantly.

it's only 1gb ram, but i used it on windows 7 last night with media center and a remote, watched a couple of divx films and it was flawless... all for £290.

tbh.. if i could get that kinda integration in the car, this thing would be as useful to me all things considered as the dedicated ipod that sits out there now.

Yeah I've seen a few installs with a mac mini, as they let you do anything, with options for bluetooth keyboard etc.

To get internet access you'd need a 3g dongle i presume, for moving or non-wifi areas, so thats pretty slow and not a lot of usage allowance either.

I think its a nice gimmick, especially if you wan to keep it oem. Why not just slide your netbook under the seat, and if any passengers want to use email while you're driving, let them use the netbook  :poke: No need for all the wires and connectivity :poke:

Anyone gone any further with this?

I've whittled it down to the following two options... 1) A hand made cable taking a composite out from the PC directly to the AV input on the back of the Z4 Nav Screen, using the AUX audio in for sound... adding in one of those cheap IBUS USB adaptors... or 2) Use the CIS-IBUS to do the lot, its more expensive, but has a much better quality of video output, and comes with all required cables etc.

This, paired to a cheap refurb netbook in the boot, should theoretically do the trick, add in free CarX and we're talking a done deal for either £250 (IBUS USB) or £370 (CIS-IBUS)...

Having not seen the quality of the AV input to the nav screen, I could take that cheap IBUS USB route only to find I've wasted £40 on the adaptor as it looks rubbish... but with the CIS-IBUS being quite a bit more expensive...

Decisions....

I'm afraid there isn't an AV Input on the screen, that's half the problem.

If you've got the TV option, you can buy a lead to do Aux-in (video/audio) but it's still nowhere near as neat as the option above in this list, which is why I got quite excited about it.

I'm in no hurry for this, I have a million other mods that aren't finished yet, but when things are settled I'll definitely be keeping an eye on that interface.
