Carly experience with E85

Gents,

what's your experience with Carly app and adapter on E85? I am researching what adapter/app would be good for my needs, as I want to diagnostic my car now and then and also I wanted to explore coding capabilities with Carly app?

Thanks!

I bought Carly at the start of the year for the coding opportunities. This is only something you really do once. I now use the Carly adapter with other free odb2 phone apps which give me more functionality for diagnostics. I was happy with this model as it was the cheapest way of doing the coding, but I won’t be renewing my licence.

Thanks for the reply and for sharing your experience. I am really considering trying. And I am comparing it to the real diagnostic tools like Autophix Car Diagnostic Tool. So I am looking for pros and cons. Personally, I don't like a yearly licence, seems too much for me.

Your location is the biggest problem I can see.
If you were in the UK then I'd suggest find someone with Carly to set your car up as you want it, then buy a diagnostic tool for future use.
I guess that's a pretty useless suggestion for you though, sorry.

I have both the Autophix and Carly. I used the Carly for easy coding and the Autophix for code reading , I don't like the way the Carly gives codes that are unique to them where as the Autophix gives codes that can be recognised easily....just my experience with both units.
You can do quite a bit with the Autophix, ie registration of new battery, live data stream and forced re-gen of catalytic converter, activate abs pump for brake bleeding etc but not coding ....hope this helps

Thanks, but so to be sure, what coding can I get for my 2003. E85, 2.5 model?

Is it worth coding? What can I improve on my Zed?

Thanks! :)

The common coding changes are things like triple flash indicators, comfort roof close (put it up and close windows from key), auto door locks when moving, horn/flashing on lock/open, always on lights i.e. as DRLs. There might be a full list on this site somewhere if you search. Not sure if there's any restrictions for earlier cars (I used on a 2006)

Coding is fun for a week. I had a subscription twice (2nd time only when my battery went on the fritz one day). Instead of renewing again I bought an Autophix and sold the Carly adaptor on here.

I have coded the following
Open/ close roof from key fob
Beep when locking ( might turn this off as it is becoming annoying 8) )
Indicator flash on locking/unlocking
Auto door lock when pulling away
Disable some bulb monitoring to allow fitment of led side light bulbs.
The triple flash on indicators does not work on the e85...well not on my 2004 e85.
Maybe a few other things but there are limited things you can change on the older cars.

Thanks, guys for the info, well I am most interested in the open / close roof from the key fob, I see no purpose in other things for now.
Well, you gave me some serious thoughts, maybe I will buy Carly now on BlackFriday.

I've coded most of the above mentioned aspects but I turned off the 'beep on locking' as it got seriously annoying. I've also coded sidelights to come on automatically without having to operate the switch on the dash. Also adjusted the delay in the remote button opening the boot, so it opens immediately as soon as you press the button on the fob.

The triple flash indicators can only be coded on the 2006 onwards LCI facelift cars. I have done this on my 2006 and found it useful as my other car is brand new and like most fairly new cars has triple flash. Now my 'old' roadster has it too!!

I would love the lights to flash when locking/unlocking. I don't know why, but it really irritates me that it doesn't lol.

Are there other coding adapters out there other than Carly?

You can code indicators to flash on locking and unlocking on a e85. I'm sure there are others out there but the Carly one is very easy to use, however as others have said I think it is a bit pricey.
With Carly you can't mess anything up as any changes are easy reset and the software makes a backup of current setting before anything is changed .
Maybe someone on here knows of other makes of coders ?

If like me you have a spare key in your pocket it goes like, get in car, boot opens, get out of car, close boot, get in car, boot opens...... :( :D

I never carry my spare key as I always keep it my keys apart - hopefully that way i won't lose them both!

I had some Carly coding done on my previous Z4 by a helpful forum member as "Auto-locking" was coded as well as a beep from the parking sensors every time I selected reverse which drove me nuts. :headbang:

Got rid of those and added three flash indicators as it was a facelift. I wanted beep on locking but due to a misunderstanding I got beep on unlocking and double beep on locking.

Another forum member coded beep on locking and three flash indicators on my current car from a laptop, but I don't know which software he used. I like the beep because I don't always notice the flash of the indicators.

But given the need for an annual subscription I'm not sure I could justify buying Carly as you only need to code the car once really. Although it can read fault codes I don't think it can clear many.

But here in the UK we are lucky to have plenty of people on here who can do it.

Good

I like Carly as it’s easier to use if you are more tech wise (think iPhone user interface etc) over INPA

It still gives good look up and search function and I like the logging/archive of previous scans

As most of my fleet is bmw it’s well worth having- but on friends and family Volvo, Citroen, Fiat it’s rubbish

Coding on very old e85’s is limited- I tried to do triple flash on turn signal and anything 03-05 it’s a no go

The best thing Carly does as others have said is opening the roof from the key! That works in every single one

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to code:
- USA style indicators (always on, for eg. 15%)
- Fold/unfold mirrors on lock/unlock

And how? :)

EDIT: Model is from 2004.

I believe the 15% indicators can be done but bulb monitoring has to be disabled from memory, I wanted my mirrors to fold on locking but it didn't work on my e85 .

For folks in the Netherlands that would like their E85 coded, I have Carly along with the adapter. Located in Rotterdam. Shoot me a message if you're interested!
