Well I finally managed it!
Got my AEs working as DRLs.
I suppose lots of others have done it too with no problem, but it's taken me six months :headbang:
First, the local BMW specialist tried. "Can't be done", was the reply after an hour of cursing coming from the back of the garage. (this by the way was with their programmer, make unknown).
Next I bought Carly as I wanted to do a few more code changes and didn't want to be stung every time.
3 flashes on indicator
visual indication of lock
visual indication of unlock
audible indication of lock
do not lock door on drive away
All done no problem. But when it came to DRLs it just would not work as I wanted.
It says you must enable 'Daytime running lights 1/2' and 'Daytime running lights 2/2' ... OK. As soon as I did this the headlight came on. Didn't want this - check other settings....
There are no settings for AEs all I had was dipped main beams [disabled], standing lights(??)[disabled] and another setting called 'Daytime running light brightness' [medium].
Standing lights (these are actually the side lights, where ,my angels are wired) - enable/disable - no difference!
Daytime brightness (maybe this is the headlight brightness) - high/medium/low/OFF!! - no difference!
This is not what I wanted, I didn't want to drive around with my headlight on in the sunshine, wearing down the battery. So I decided to give up and put everything back to how it was, coding wise.
I disabled the 'Daytime running lights 1/2' and 'Daytime running lights 2/2' settings again but by mistake left on the 'standing lights' enable.
Eureka!!
Angels only... in positions Auto/off and side lights (with ignition on).
So the main point Carly points out "Both daytime running lights 1/2 and daytime running lights 2/2 must be enabled" is only true if you want the headlights are the DRLs, for side lights as the DRLs they must be disabled!
I hope reading this means that some other Z4 owner is not reduced to tearing his hair out for six months.
