Carly Battery Registration Failure - alternatives

Replaced my 35is 12 year old (!) battery with a like-for-like 70Ah Bosch battery and expected to use Carly to register the battery.

I am using a Carly Generation 2 orange ODBII reader (WiFi) but battery registration is failing. Rather annoyingly the lifetime licence I bought for iPhone had been deactivated last month and they expected me to get onto a subscription plan. Support sorted it in the end but really rather annoying to have yet another problem now.

I've had repeated attempts with engine on / engine off / door open / closed but got nowhere, registration failed every time. Can't get battery data either despite what's shown in the snapshots below.

Would be great if anyone knows how to fix it.

I'm thinking to consider alternatives as I've also seen on the forums that Carly might not actually do the entire job of recording date done etc.

From a google search it appears that Carly hardware can't be used with Bimmerlink and I'd need a cable from Amazon. I've heard of Bimmergeeks (looks expensive) and ISTA to run on a laptop. Any suggestions?

Bimmergeeks is the best before you embrace ISTA..IMHO..Foxwell as a dedicated device

I often find that one won't work for one thing and another will..then vice versa

Bimmerheeks is a one off price no subs excellent support n product

Looks to be $95 for the diagnostics licence for protool/bimmergeeks and then a cable such as this for £33:

Can ProTool be used with any USB K+DCAN Cable?

If it works for ISTA it should do..you'll need an OTG to USB adapter for most Android devices

Something i wondered, can a battery few years old be re registered if you think it's not charging properly.
The percent charge given by Foxwell seems low at times.
When i first registered battery Foxwell didn't really confirm it had taken.
The historical charge percent seem to fall off quite quickly to 60 percent most of the time.
I'm just wondering if the system thinks battery is nearly fully charged.
I think i read anyway it only goes to say 80 percent to leave room for regenerative braking charging.

So I bought both coding and diagnostics protools and using a protools specific cable from the same seller above (different product linked below) Any ideas anyone ?

Cable must be ok as you have partial success..

Suggest you try again after shutdown..make sure ignition is on etc

If I remember from when I did mine with ProTool (code & register), ignition ON but engine NOT running.

Used a Creatr 310+ to register battery on my e91 no problems. Obviously wont do all other fancy coding stuff. Where in UK are you?

As @DonDon and @B21 have suggested I'll try again this evening with ignition on after shutting down the engine.

Incorrect method..you need to power up the car and press the start button without brake / clutch so it doesn’t start but the engine fault light is on..make sure it stays on..during the process

Thanks! That worked!

I never normally hit the start button without foot on brake to enable ignition without starting the engine so I didn’t try that through my many failed attempts.

Also now found the user guide for protools - could have done with an icon for that rather than a menu item but hey ho.

Cheers all.

Well that helps explain why others have also failed! :tumbleweed:
