No not really, other than being circa £40-70 poorer, depending on if you need the cable/bluetooth interface or have a suitable one already.
The only thing I can think of is there is a remote chance of damaging which ever module your coding etc but this the same risk you have when you use any software to do this sort of thing.
As long as you make sure the car battery is properly charged and there's plenty of juice in your phone/tablet you should be fine. Carly's the easiest, quickest and most user friendly software I have used on a BMW so its a pretty safe bet really.

OK. So now I'm confused. What are FRM modules and what happens if they fail? Not heard of ISTA, but I'm new so will do some Googling.

It's the only unit in the car I'm aware of that you can screw up purely by normal coding. Seems to have a firmware bug that causes it to semi-brick itself. It fails with other coding tools too but for some reason Carly users brick this more than others.

Can you quantify this, via links, references? As it's the first i've heard.
I've been coding each of the 3 available modules on my e85 many times over the past 10 months without issue.
