Carbon Hood

I was giving the M the 1st polish of the year today and inbetween mulling over work crap, and where to go for a blast tomorrow to enjoy the lack of rain, I realised I'd not seen or heard of anyone fitting a carbon hood on any z4's let alone M's

Seems strange as there's a massive weight saving (it's the biggest panel by a mile) to be had. The E46 M3 seems so have almost every panel catered for (not always to the most asthetically pleasing outcome, vents and cut outs everywhere  ) yet I've only seen the coup in race guise with any carbon on, and as schweet as it looks it's not really to my taste.

I'd be looking at it purely as a weight down part. Not really fussed about a clear laquered job. (although it might look pretty cool on black)

Cheers

Quite a few people have mate. Not a cheap job. About £1800.

Check out Andy's white Z4, Sixspeed.

Bare in mind the Z4 roof is tiny, weight saving in minimal.

Crikey, that's a lot for a small-ish panel.
As OP mentioned, must be a big weight saving in having a CF hood (bonnet) but that would probably cost £3k+ if the roof cost is anything to go by.

Bah - wrap, schmap... :P

Wasn't the OP talking about a Carbon Hood (bonnet) though, not a Carbon Roof?

TC Kline have a Carbon Hood from their Carbon Coupe, but it does not have the two M creases/darts, as it's a copy of a standard Z4 hood. Would imagine it would save a decent amount of weight, although our hood is made from Aluminium so not as heavy as you might think.

Aluminum is light?

Sorry yea, Hood = Bonnet. (appologies for going all american, it's just what we call ours at work)

Yea harimirium is light enough, could comfortably shed a few kilo's though by going composite.

£1800 is a fair wedge just for a few kilo though, probably better spent elsewhere.

I'm sure I went through this list somewhere before with Andy (SixSpeed) :P

Carbon wings are £1800 a pair
Carbon bonnet is £2800
Carbon doors are £3500 a pair
Carbon front bumper is £3500
Carbon rear hatch is £2900
Carbon roof is £1800

So a total of about £16k. Or you can call BMW Motorsport and they have a full kit for about the same price.

All available here if you're feeling brave.

Hmmm, bit of weight saving up front and back would be good :). That rear hatch is pretty heavy. So the rear hatch along with the bonnet, or if that is already quite like (aluminium), two front wings instead :)

Oops..Sorry my bad. Hood = bonnet...
x 2.

Not sure how much the bonnet weighs but don't think you'll get alot of weight savings, would you...........

On the rear boot lid, i spoke to these guys ( http://www.geoffsteelracing.co.uk/parts/details/49 ) based up north (anyone close to them??) who make/sell and race carbon fibre bits on their race m3's - see link. I was quoted about £500-£700 for the rear lid, which is quite a good deal, but needed to have atleast 7-10 subscribers to make it worth while for him due to development costs involved.

If you guys are interested, i can get back in touch with them and to get the ball rolling - i'd imagine you could do the same with the "hood"... We just need donor parts for moulding, which is a challange in it's own right as the part is unusable after.

The C/f boot lid will most probably use a perspect sheet instead of glass. Not sure what all this does to the 50:50 weight distribution, so a corner weighting geo setup may also need considering.

If £700 sounds worthwhile and we can get atleast 7 subscribers then

so, £16k - what sort of weight would that save and what would the 0-60 be then?

A full set would be something like this... and these weights include the packaging!
CARBON FIBRE SIDE SKIRTS 6kg (pair)
CARBON FIBRE WINGS / FENDERS Z4M 3kg (pair)
FULL CARBON FIBRE RACING REAR DIFFUSER 3kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE DOORS 10kg (pair)
Z4M CARBON FIBRE FRONT BUMPER 10kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE REAR HATCH LID 5kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE ROOF 4kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE VENTED BONNET 10kg

So how much would the original parts weigh?

So how much would the original parts weigh?
CARBON FIBRE SIDE SKIRTS 6kg (pair) - standard are 4kg/pair so a saving of 0kg
CARBON FIBRE WINGS / FENDERS Z4M 3kg (pair) - standard are 9kg/pair so a saving of 6kg
FULL CARBON FIBRE RACING REAR DIFFUSER 3kg - doesn't have one, so this is a 3kg increase
Z4M CARBON FIBRE DOORS 10kg (pair) - standard are 27kg/pair so a saving of 17kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE FRONT BUMPER 10kg - standard is 6kg/pair so a saving of 4kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE REAR HATCH LID 5kg - standard is 14kg/pair so a saving of 9kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE ROOF 4kg - standard is 8kg/pair so a saving of 4kg
Z4M CARBON FIBRE VENTED BONNET 10kg - standard is 11kg/pair so a saving of 1kg

A total weight saving (assuming you don't paint them and don't need extra structural elements to stop them vibrating) is 44kg.

You'd probably have at least 1kg of packaging for each element, so take off another 10kg and you've got a saving somewhere over 50kg.

Most people would also remove the large battery, some of the interior trim, and replace the glass with plastic, put manual seats and/or carbon seats in, so you'd probably easily get another 50kg saving.

So if you spend £20k you could strip 100kg from the car.

so, all that money spent and really all you needed to do was leave your fat wifes at home, i did 1 better, i got rid of mine hehe
