Carbon Fibre wrapped interior

So, just to give people an idea of my experiences....

The film is sticky on one side and is very tough. Its 3M Di-Noc or something and i bought a 1200x600 sheet http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/60x120cm-Genuine-3M-Di-Noc-Carbon-Fibre-Vinyl-Sheet_W0QQitemZ330403842947QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4ced9a8b83. It will scuff so always make sure your working on a soft surface like a towel or something. Its easy to drop the piece your working on and ruin it.

Main thing: This would be MUCH easier with two people, one to do the stretching/wrapping and the other with the hairdryer. The main problem i found was that i was heating it up, then i would burn myself, then i would put the dryer down, and then the wrap would be cooling of before i had chance to manipulate it. Frustrating.

Next annoying thing, photo to help explain:

Something you will also find is that you wrap one section perfectly.
Say the Yellow section where you would pull and tuck it under for the handbrake cut away. You then heat up the red section next to it to do the same and you will also heat up the yellow section and undo all your good work in the yellow section.
Thats the thing with this stuff once its hot it instantly goes very pliable and loses its heat formed shape.
Also it pulls a LOT, you can really stretch this stuff. This means again you nail one section, and when your doing the bit next to it, that pulls the first section out. This is AGAIN where another person would really help keep certain bits in check while you move onto the next bit.

Its not like you have rolls of the stuff to keep starting again if you stuff it up so Its lucky that you can keep messing around with it till you get it right.

Dreamer - excellent job and now on my list of must do's! Just one question - how did you decide at which angle to have the weave running as this will need to be the same on all surfaces?
 
Alan, i went opposite direction on dash to console as i thought that would look better than the same direction but slightly out by an angle. You dont get a huge amount of material and trying to gauge if the weave is pointing in the exact same direction isnt easy. Have a crack and you'll see its a bit of a faff to get right :D

I did say almost as good!

But seriously looks amazing - its not an easy job - I did some little pieces in my last car its damn hard work. I also used some lacquer on my kick plates to toughen then up - which maybe an option if you find these are not durable enough.

You fancy doing the roll hoops now? I want to get mine in black - but i think carbon would look nicer.

How much did they want for it as a matter of interest. I paid £180 for mine
 
Srhutch i didnt actually ask as i knew it wouldnt be 35 quid and an afternoon in the garden. :D

Offduty - The dash goes a bit like..... Take the center vents out (not as easy as it sounds, do a search), unscrew the stereo. You then see four screws to hold the dash strip.
Then remove the small air vent furthest from the drivers side - two screws, one behind the cup holder and one you can see at the top under a screw cover. Then it pulls out.
Then reach round the back of the strip to find a retaining 'pin' holding the narrower end of the strip. Remove this (a bit of a pig) then pull the strip of. The small section by the steering wheel just pulls out.
 
looks good anyone had the interior dash retrimmed in this stuff....http://www.topgrainhides.co.uk/ came across it on an M3 site ??
 
ZermattV, that would need a pro to upholster i would think. WAY beyond my skill sets :D

Looks good though and sounds very durable. Bet its not cheap :o
 
My skills are well below yours so will need to get someone to do it so I'm investigating with a retrimmer....

i have been thinking of something similar.

i have a sample of red leather on the way and if it matches the seats i was going to photoshop a few options for my interior to see what i can do :D

Dreamer, Thanks - have placed an order for the 'sticky stuff' and will attempt this when I return to the UK in June (well after all the other jobs Mrs J has stored up for me!)
