Carbon Fibre based overlays on interior trim

There was a burst of activity a couple of years ago headed by Silverstar and Nitrix in using genuine carbon fibre to over lay on the E89 interior trim areas.

I bought from Silverstar a set of interior trims and some panels that had been carbon fibre’ d and then epoxy resin coated..

For various reasons they languished in my goodies cupboard…

This winter I decided to fit them, then as I pondered I realised that leaving the door handle trim in its original yukkie dark brown trim would be an affront to tactile and visual tastes..

Therefore I contacted Silverstar with a fire to getting these done..pleased to say he’s still in the market for doing them.

These arrived yesterday., just unwrapped and very beautiful.

So the good bits are..

Despite quite thick layers of epoxy the trim and controls reassemble without any issues

The photos don’t do justice to the lustre and depth

A lovely tactile feel to the finish

I had the gear gaiter re-finished by Royal Steering Wheels to suit them plus the Royal Steering wheel re-furb

Things to consider are

Unless you have a spare trim set there is a 2 to 3 week turnaround / down time

Costs..Silverstar quotes £500 for a complete set of your trim being processed..plus p+p..which given the time and quality I honk is very reasonable for the result…especially if you are a crack handed muppet

I think the cleaning of the surfaces will need to be done very carefully to avoid scratches in the epoxy

Well pleased and a big thanks to Silverstar

Unfortunately I’m limited to the house following a major eye op but hopefully in 4 to 6 weeks time I’ll be able to fit them.

Very very nice. If I had £500 to burn I'd consider it but since vinyl wrap is available, and a fairly decent alternative, this falls way down on the Wishlist. Still amazes me how much carbon fibre costs.

It’s not the cost of the materials it’s the time and labour required to make an outstanding job..

I did look at wraps..although they are much cheaper it’s not the same class by a long way....but appreciate not everyone wants or can afford this approach..

Yeah its not a criticism, as I said, CF costs a lot and its mad that after half a century there isn't a cheaper way to make it yet. At least you can say you're one of a few owners with true CF trim.

It was my pleasure doing the door trims B21, strangely therapeutic  They do look great with the alcantara and yellow stitching.

If you are worried about scratching up the lacquer you could always get them covered in PPF, since they have been lacquered the same as any car paint.

Beardyjon, unfortunately there is no quick way of doing these and it's labour intensive hence the cost. The difference between real carbon fiber and vinyl wrap is night and day although I do understand from a budget point of view.

I'm not always a fan of CF trim, but that looks beautiful, especially with the alcantara and yellow stitching.

The gloss black parts of my interior are starting to look a little worse for wear, this is very tempting!

Yes it can, see the images of the sample below. But it isn't carbon fiber, I think it's called alufiber.

Oh cool!
My ‘aluminium carbon’ trim looks like it could do with a freshen up. I’m wondering if this would be a good replacement.

What how much would a set be in this?

I think the original alu carbon trim is kind of like fake carbon fiber hydro dipped pattern, so I think this would make a good replacement looking kind of original but with better depth to the pattern and 3D like effect that carbon fiber brings.

Price will be like B21 commented earlier £500 plus shipping for full set if you send in your cores, this fabric is a little cheaper than carbon fiber but I would have to buy it in especially for your job. The price is for a full set, that is the two dash trims, center console plus the two door trims. The trims are hand finished with multiple coats of epoxy and then sent off to my local profession body shop to be 2K lacquered.
