Carbon clean up

Had my 63,000 mile 3.0 terracleaned 2000 miles ago.
Fuel consumption gone from 28 to 32.8 mpg. Don't know about performance increase cos I haven't had it long enough to note any difference. What I do know is that it goes like stink when I get above the 3000 rpm big grin zone.
I reckon it'll pay for itself after about 20 tank fills.

Yes in these cars as they are not direct injection.

I have to admit I'm sceptical that a clean such as this would yield such dramatic mpg improvements, got to at least in part be down to differences in the driving between tankfuls.
 
A member of the Lotus club I belonged to recently had his highish mileage engine Terracleaned. It ended up completely knackered as it removed all the carbon from areas where he had engine wear ie around the valves and piston crown and he lost almost all compression. Verdict therefore is that the process is very effective but if you have engine wear which is masked by the build up of carbon then dont do it. But of course you will not realise you have engine wear unless it is stripped down so for me, good quality petrol plus the odd dose of redex.

redex is snake oil these days. i believe all the things good about it have been removed and it's basically just 2 stroke oil. same goes for terraclean. i believe that regular servicing (over and above what BMW state) and premium fuel with the additional cleaning additives is all you need.

these additional miracle cures, the money would be better spent elsewhere. as for improvements in mpg, etc, unless both were done on a rolling road there are so many different factors it's impossible to rely on them.

traffic differences, wind, rain, tyre pressure, roof down, windows open, ac on, etc, etc.

for example i could easily show asda fuel is better than v power by manipulating the changing factors.
