Carbon Airbox

Hi Everybody

I would quite fancy puttng the CSL's carbon airbox on to my Z4M.
Has anybody done this, what are the pros and the cons?

Thank you

I dont know of anyone who has an actual CSL airbox installed but i've read of a couple with a CSL-style airbox like the one from CA-Automotive here.

Hmm.. come to think of it i have seen one Z4M with the CSL intake and that was the AC Schnitzer PROFILE concept car from 2007. It was a modified Z4M Coupe with among other things, ACS exhausts, a software tune and a carbon fibre intake that looks suspiciously like the one from an E46 M3 CSL.

I just realised that i did not answer any of your questions..

I do not own such an intake but my uneducated opinion would be that the power gains would not be worth it for the money.. With a custom software tune and just the intake you'd be looking at say 20hp? Maybe a bit more with other modifications. The sound would be awesome though.. In the cost of the intake you should also add the cost of an Alpha-N software tune as the CSL and CSL type intakes delete the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensors. Alpha-N tuning is about 1000-1300 GBP if i remember correctly..

I had an argue with a friend this weekend about hp gains or losses with the airbox and we didnt come to a conclusion.
I read that u loose some hp and others say that u gain some??? I dont know so would also be very happy if the thread would have some answers

Thank you for your help, the noise is what i am after, and the additional 20BHP, and it will be a good platform for future mods (so I thought).

Thank you again.

ZM4000, with one of those two intake designs and a good software tune i'm fairly confident you would NOT lose any power.

monzon, if you end up installing either one then i definitely want to hear more about it. If you're thinking of upgrading to a supercharger later on though then you shouldnt buy an intake like this. The intake manifold that the superchargers require go where these intakes do. But of course if you do get one and then decide to go for force induction i would be happy to take the intake off your hands for a nominal fee. :D

I did price the CSL intake mod up when I first got the Z4MC, and it was close to £4k fitted (just for the intake) and then you'd have to get someone to do the Alpha-N. Then you'd want the CSL's lighter exhaust system and the seats...

I decided it would be cheaper to buy a CSL.

Actually our manifolds are the same as the CSL's. Everything after that is different obviously but the manifold itself is the same. They have the same part number and everything. CSL and Z4M.

The intake is obviously different but it can be retrofitted. Then you'd need light bucket seats, CF roof, no radio, air con or headlight washers, less noise insulation, better suspension and CSL wheels... I think a Z4 M CSL would definitely be a force to be reckoned with. :driving:
