IMO Many things can go wrong if the tune is wrong or a mistake happens during the procedure.
The tune may not be stable and the rpms are not steady.
The tune is not installing in the car.
The tune may be interrupted during its installation accidentally.
The tune is installed perfectly but is not finalised and accepted as finalised by the DME.
And all those trial and error things take so much time. The needed time to read only the DME is more around one hour.
I think all of those things (assuming you have a good tuner) are very unlikely, and to say the car would be fucked is a bit melodramatic. The car will run ok with a standard map, (it reverts to it's own 'alpha-n' map (i.e maf has failed)) but of course you will get no benefits.

Tbh the eventuri intake looks to be the better bang for buck at a 1/4 the price? This is what I'll be going for with the exhaust mod.
Yes it is probably better vfm, but make no mistake, an eventuri really doesn't approach the sound qualities of a CSL style box, the difference is big. I've driven both btw, and I'm pretty sure the owner of the other car would agree with me. Then factor in the known hp gains and it doesn't seem such a bad idea, particularly as the karbonius boxes are fairly cheap and you can have the tune done for £400.
Tom what you say is correct. If everything fails you can restore the cars DME back to factory settings. But Bmw official Dealers can charge same money as a new tune for that. Also the CSL Airbox with the stock software it will be an ill car.
Most of the tuners do not tune your car directly, except if you are fortunate enough to be in the UK or in the States and you bring your car to them. So you have to rely on the program and the equipment that the tuner will send you to read the DME.
Believe me all those things can happen easily. I didn't say that the car will be f@cked. I say that you as person will be since you will have paid more that 3500 Euros and have to restore your car in stock.
Also you mention that the tune can be done with 400? Who has that price? I am asking because I paid significantly higher than that, almost double price. It would be nice to be a reliable tuner on the market with a so competitive price.
I think you're being a little paranoid, from what I have seen it's extremely unlikely anything to go wrong with a remote flash and if the worst were to happen I can't see your tuner leaving you with zero options, and I can't see a scenario where you would have to return to stock. It's not rocket science this stuff, an alpha-n map is fairly basic as far I understand it.
The price of £400 was for a tune carried out properly on a dyno (I have about 20 different dyno run print outs from the 1st tune!) and imo the best way of tuning a car short of live mapping (it did take them 5 days though! they kindly gave me a loaner for the duration). DME on the bench to program, so whether that's possible remotely I'm not sure. I looked at live mapping, but baulked at the cost of hiring the runway strip for a few hours... was going to end up well over 1k.
I have previously had my old M3 alpha-n mapped by a well known 'bmw specialist tuner' just north of london and quite frankly it was a piece of s**t. Like a lot of these supposed specialists it was just a flash tune, no dyno work and it cost £750 or something!! Massive hesitation with WOT in third for a start. Joke, and I'm not the only one to have been fleeced by a long shot. I looked at their offering for the Z4M and it seems they couldn't get that to work at all (rev dropping on idle, heel and toe issues) so needless to say I walked another way and very happy I did!
Sadly I'm almost certain they don't offer remote tune for the reasons stated above, but I can ask if you like.

I have seen tunes for 400, which as far as i know, are now pretty much ripped off versions from the three or so main players in the field. Even my workshop is now offering tunes here in DXB. As to their experience in doing so, or varying maps?? NFI, but i am sure the milage will vary

Alpha N, like women, its pretty much you get what you pay for.
That's not been the case in my experience. Don't believe the hype.
Here is my latest dyno run as I went for an adjustment to the tune for my SS backbox, fuelled conservatively at high rpm. For reference this a Mustang dyno, reads a lot lower than dynodynamics apparently... The car after me on it was a Lambo Hurricane which they were doing a baseline on before slapping on an ESS supercharger to tune

(obviously I hung around

) It made 600, factory quotes 610. The only S54 they've had better than this was with the same config plus headers. The car has always run perfectly with the map (2 years now), no fault codes, no hesitation, no flat spots.
