Car won't start

Went to start car at the weekend (3.0si), heard a funny noise only momentarily from the boot, bit like when the roof motor starts, and then the car went dead (didn't get as far as cranking, it was a split second thing).

Since then, as I turn the key, all the dash lights come on as per normal, everything functions, but as soon as I turn the key to final position, nothing. I hear, what I presume is the fuel pump priming etc, but no clicks or anything when the key hits the last position. I don't have a spare key to try.

It's not the battery as swapped with a known good battery and the multimeter results were fine anyway. Search has thrown up ignition switch as a possibility, any other possibilities, please?
 
Same symptoms as mine a few weeks ago. Replaced the ignition switch (cheap purchase) but nothing. I then thought about the starter motor but normally you get a clicking so must be starter solenoid. Thinking starter and solenoid would be expensive I put my registration into Eurocarparts and motor with solenoid was about £85. No brainer so ordered one and it was delivered before I had even got the old motor out. Replaced motor and car fired first turn of ignition so bingo.
Its not a difficult job to do but there seem to be mixed reviews about the starter so perhaps should have spent extra for a Bosche one. Anyway no problems so far and engine seems to turn over with more vigour.
 
I had the same thing happen, but mine showed signs of struggling to start for a couple of days before, then nothing...

At first I thought it was the battery, but having checked and charged it with no joy, I called the RAC out, they confirmed that it was the starter motor, recon ordered from ECP (borrowed some star sockets from friend) fitted in about 90 mins...
 
Sound like the starter motor to me, might be lucky and get it to crank with a wallop to it :D
