Car Tax - Ouch

so last year I did 780 miles, tax last year was £270 so for every mile it cost me 35p in tax, doesn't sound too bad that way

Mine gets used daily but it's still an ouch! £280 this year, robbing….

I'm pretty much the same, but have 3 cars that only do 6000 total for all 3. So that's nearly £700 for 6000 miles!! That's before I mention low mileage motorcycles!! PUT IT ON FUEL AT THE PUMP AND LET FOLKS PAY FOR WHAT THEY USE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D

for an extra £100 a year. I think the tax is great value on the twin turbo 3l :D

i agree

if you are having to pay more tax, then do more miles to justify it..... however then most people will be complaining about the tax on petrol

That's why it should be abolished and put on petrol.

i would agree. i had to tax the westy for a track day so i could drive it there. it cost just under 130 for 6 months tax, i then sent it back and got a refund of 93. so 35 odd quid for 1 day. when you take into account the surcharge they put on for buying 6 months only. fucking robbing bastards.

its not like you can even get a full months use out of buying tax. Ive known too many people get caught out by the dvla when redeeming tax as the dvla didnt "process" it quick enough so tipped over the month so the basic advice i found is to send it back with plenty of spare time.

the tax thing is a ticking time bomb anyway. they tied it to emissions and in the process "most" family cars like a focus etc the tax came down a bit. everyone was happy unless you drove a people carrier or something. now manufacturers are making more and more cars that are very low on emissions so tax is dropping how long before we see a change in the tax bands?

Just tax'd the car again

I use the zed probably once a month which means every time I take it out it cost me £23.33 :headbang:

Sadly I did this for the TVR, I think it went or the first time in 8 weeks yesterday! The Z goes about twice a month. I have recently been questioned as to why I need two cars. But I rationalise this by: they are sports cars, summer is the time to use them.

The only reason I can see for not putting road tax on petrol is the impact it would have on transport costs, as hauliers expenses would dramatically increase as would bus fares to cover the extra cost.

I'd say you folk are taxed enough already. In Germany I paid 120 Euro for two years registration for two cars, the departed Zed and the 328.

As for fuel tax. You guys already pay a lot. Consider this. The cost of a US gallon of petrol before taxes Is $3.20 or 1.95 quid. Yet when I buy petrol in Britain it cost me $10 per US gallon. Minus the raw cost of petrol you fine folk pay $5.80 per US gallon in tax. In America we pay about $1 in tax per US gallon. Maybe you folk should have a Boston tea party of your own.

with the prices you pay for petrol do you honestly think that the road tax was not already in it. ??
I pay $70 (48 pounds) a year for my plates, the fuel is half your price and it is 75% taxes, road tax included.
the fuel cost is lower in Az but the plates cost more.... its still all taxation

don't forget this is on petrol, the price breakdowns almost always split out crude cost as a separate entity. It
has already been taxed , over here they are called government royalties etc. @25 -35% .
Tax the crude, tax the refiners, tax the product at the pumps, pay for it with personal after tax dollars (or pounds).....

time for another Peasants Revolt or a Boston Tea Party :headbang: :headbang:

Just taxed my Disco and they've taken £490 from me - Your £280 seems like a bargain from where I'm sitting!

What makes it worse is the fact that I bought it at the end of March 2006 - If I'd bought it a week earlier it would have only been £280 - Bandits

A big thank you to Brown or was it Darling for that little gem! Oh but it was for green reasons. yeah - right, I believe you!!!!

Agreed mcbeee, There have been a few times that several of the US states have put out the notion of including the retail sales tax (our version of VAT) in an items final consumer price. Just as a convenience to the customer so they don't have to do maths at the checkout. Gosh! I love it so when the government looks out for me. NOT! Most folks do not even realize what the actual cost of fuel or that item at Tesco's really is. Most folks in America THINK that the oil companies make the most profit on a barrel of oil. No they don't. In total numbers it may seem that way. But we are dealing with economies of scale. Most petrol companies make an after expenses profit of a few cents per gallon. The US government makes $.55 per gallon in tax at the pump from the consumer. The states average about $.25 per gallon in tax at the pump. That's in addition to the pre-consumer taxes that the oil companies pay as mcbeee noted. Hell of a scam. Then there is the UK, Europe that have a %1000 percent tax increase over what the US citizen pays. Bernie Madoff would be proud of the British government. Sorry to digress into other things. But it is very relevant.

Just does not make sense!

Vehicle excise duty is an annual ( or six monthly if you like) luxury goods owners tax. If you had an essential cheap transport low emissions car then you would get 0 cost ved
I do 40000 miles a year and car tax is 30 quid on it, the zed does 6k and it's nigh on £500. But that's fine as I still choose to do what I do. Goods tax like fuel/alcohol/tobacco are to discourage excessive use and raise revenue. I think we should tax online moaning.
:fuelfire:

As talksthetorque seems to like taxes. I say tax him double. After all the government knows better what to do with the citizens money than the citizens do. Give it all to them they'll take care of us.

No it's not. I pay £200 a year for an 11-year old
Honda Civic 1.6. Hardly a 'luxury good'.
