Car sounds like driving over cattle grid

Hi newbie here just purchased my first z4 2.2 with only 44 thousand miles . Only had it two weeks so not drove it much just took it out and noticed a noise coming from rear end which can only be described as the same noise as driving over a cattle grid. Any ideas as to what it may be many thanks Lee.

Hi and welcome.

Probably rear spring broken, common fault especially at that mileage.

Does it go if the car is rolling in neutral ?
Does it get worse if turning left/right rather than just straight ?
Any wheel weights missing and a tyre need re-ballancing ?
Does it vary according to speed ?

Try and break it down to elimiate things

I had similar on the weekend, turned out to be the wheel nuts all loose on one front wheel even though at 70mph it felt as though it was all coming from the rear.

If it is a spring then it's a good time to lower all round:

Definitely cheaper than a replacement pair.

You might also consider new shocks with springs:

Or maybe some coilovers?

I would have thought a broken spring will be more of a one off bang when hitting bump, rather than a constant rumble ? This sounds more like a vibration/balancing issue if its constant.

More info need to diagnose properly I think...

hi guys, changed all four tyres as the rear two were normal tyres and the fronts run flats, new ones are bridgestone Potenza's run flats but the noise is still there, its always around 1100 rpm and when you are decelerating, took it to a local indy and he cant find anything wrong, in fact he said its really clean for its age(2003) springs/shocks all good heat shields all fine, he said to keep an eye on it but the noise is bugging me, to be honest only had it two months and so far not enjoying it any ideas guys thanks lee.

wishbone bushes, common problem when braking decelarating ,just a thought had it previously in other e46 330.

Sometimes there are noise from the rear headshield near diff. The shield is mounted by some screws in the reinforcement plate. The headshield rattled in the plate.

Regards

going back to the local indy at the end of the month for another look fingers crossed they find something will post up any findings.
