car rev sound

im no expert in cars but im interested in putting some rev noise to the car when i turn it on and drive. does this require a change in the entire exhaust system ? or just certain parts ? and what parts do i need ?

The sound generator certainly makes a positive difference. My 3.0 has it standard, and I remove one of the two pieces of foam that normally dulls the noise. Sounds amazing.

i have a z4 2.5i 2003. what would be the right thing to do ?

If you google 'Z4 retrofit sound generator' something will come up. There's a US forum with a step by step for the 2.5 engine. Sound generator parts can be bought for £30-£50 in the EU. It's meant to be pricier in the US due to the parts coming from Germany :(

Sound generator has no effect to the outside world though, it only changes the noise in the cabin.

The sound generator is a plastic tube like contraption that directs sound from the air inlet to the back of the passenger footwell - the sound fills the cabin and is audible to you, but not really anyone outside. Especially if you have a coupe :D

It is a great mod

It's so weird to think all that extra noise isn't making itself known to the outside world :P It sounds so difference inside.

The alternative (and more costly) options are to get an induction kit or change the exhaust system.

Given that the sound generator is cheap, and OEM BMW parts, that's probably the winner
