I have a car related task for you all. The lovely mrs Eastwood has the opportunity of a company car. I read through the documents last night and these are the parameters.

1. Must be a 4 door
2. Must have 4 seats minimum
3. Must have Metallic Paint (suppose that’s white out of the question then)
4. Insurance group 14 or lower
5. No Alfa Romeo models (for obvious reasons)
6. No Subaru models (see above)
7. Cannot be a 4x4/suv (these are for director level only)
8. Budget is approx 22k – but that’s excluding any discounts that may be available.

They issued a guideline of popular models that other people have chsoen:-

Audi A3
Audi A4
Jaguar X-type
VW Golf
VW Passat
Honda Accord
Merc C class
Bmw 3 series

I shall look forward to your suggestions.

Any preference on petrol or diesel?
What will it be used for?
Does it have to be new?

Octavia vRS would be high on my list if I was told I had a £20k company car budget and had to buy new.
Not sure what level of 1-series £22k would get you.
MINI Clubman Cooper S (technically 4 doors )

Grp14 or lower... that makes things tough.

Does anyone actually care about insurance groups these days :D

Dave

Out of that list. 3 Series (obviously), or the A3 or A4.
Also, what about:
- Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi Zetec
- Volvo S80 2.0 D3

just to answer a few queries. the car will be brand new once ordered with desired spec etc. She will be using it for the work commute mainly which will be approx 55ish miles per day. diesel might be better and she can claim fuel back via tax.

as for the car suggestions, I can't see her driving either a skoda, vauxhall, or a ford. plus I dont think I would let her choose one. (no offense).

How will she claim back fuel costs to her place of work if she's employed? HMRC deems that to be private mileage so I think thats a no-can-do...... :(

Just mention it in case it influences your fuel choice....

off the list I'd go Merc C Class ...

IMHO In the lower end models they always look smarter than base 3 series and the default A4

maybe she can make it look that its not her normal place of work i.e, she is on the road more than office based

If the decision has to be made now, it will be new VW Passat Bluemotion because it is new model. Current 3-series will be replaced in October this year.

Second choice will be Audi A4. If possible, she should wait for the new 3-series later this year.

You'd get a Volvo V60 for £22k with a discount, is that allowed? I like them, quite classy.

Good shout.

Other one for me, probably my first choice, would be the Citroen C5 - looks very good, different from the obvious crop, great diesel engines and, according to the reviews (including some long termers) well built! The only downside I can see is the depreciation, but that's not a concern here.

Oddly, I don't think I would have either of the Audis, almost everyone I know that has a current model has had problems with them. Really put me off.

some good ideas there, the only thing putting me off the BMW route is the boggo spec versions of either the 3 or 1 series look, well pants. probably the same with the A4 if i am honest.

Sadly Mr HMRC is more cunning than that .... they want to know what your employer deems as your normal place of work and then its only any mileage you do in excess of that journey that qualifies as business mileage - even if, for example, you have a home/work journey of 30 miles and do a trip 40 miles in the opposite direction, you can only claim the 10 mile difference (spent many years trying to duck and dive this one LOL)...the only realistic answer is to be based at home if your employer will allow it, and even then, if the revenue investigates you and finds regular trips to one particular venue, it will 'select' that as a place of work (which realistically it probably is!).

All very dull but could be costly in the long run if an uneconomical car is chosen

Yep, business mileage is for business related mileage, not getting to and from your normal place of business. Thats commuting mileage :D
