Car insurance price hikes...WTF?!!!

I paid 730 last year.... 29 years young, 8 year no claim +protection, £750 excess... this year with an extra years no claims and closer to that magic 30 (i was refused an insurance quote from BMW last year when collecting my car as i was under 30) £1100 with £750 excess

Thats mental.

I've also noticed a hike in insurance quotes. seems soo wrong that not only have I had 2 paycuts due to the recession, but I have to pay 150-200 more on car insurance even though I haven't claimed for the past 13 years !

aquazi, If you remember I had the same issue in July. Best thing to do is to get quote from Swiftcover (cheapest quote I found) and then see if Chris Knotts can match/beat it. That's what I did... went from a £2900 + £350 excess quote from elephant down to £1400 + £500 excess from Chris Knotts.

Why not go for Swiftcover?... Read their T&C.

Only thing with Chris Knott is that you can't drive any other cars as 3rd party fire and theft... a price I was happy to pay. :)

I renewed mine with Admiral about 2 months ago. The quote was up in price, but when I phoned them they knocked £70 off right away as soon as I mentioned cheaper like-for-like quotes on moneysupermaket and comparethemeerkat.

Just running through this now because my auto renew from direct line was mental..

just put my reg into moneysupermarket, without adding mileage etc and it's come up with an "industry valuation" of £12.5k..

article recently in the newspapers that insurance renewals are on average 40% higher than this time last year...

You can if you ask, they added it to mine FOC recently as I needed to test drive old bangers. Apparently as we drive roadsters by default we are not insured to drive other cars :?

PS think you will find cover is third party only, not TPFT.

I did the same ..most insurance companies dont want to lose your custom so will match ...

I was with ADMIRAL last year but this year they couldnt match ESURE ...so i changed ...!!

Yes, mainly...

We may choose to repair your car with recycled parts, where appropriate. Parts used may not have been made by the car's manufacturer but will be of a similar standard.

But there were other things...

if we cannot arrange a courtesy car, we will repay your alternative travelling costs up to a maximum of £15 per day

your car is damaged, we will use one of our recommended repairers to repair it. If you choose not to use them, we may not pay more than our recommended repairers would have charged and we may choose to settle the claim by a financial payment.

Oh and this one made me laugh...

any liability, loss, damage, cost or expense if you use your car at any event during which your car may be driven:

* on a motor racing track, airfield, Nuremberg Ring, de-restricted toll road or...

lol.. i am with swiftcover at the moment :o :o :o :o however doubt these is any chance i'll ever be on the Nuremberg Ring (unless Nurburg is renamed!)

Swiftcover were the cheapest by a long shot for me... but i will try Chris Knotts next month, when its closer to the renewal date to see if they can better it.

My dad is with Esure and on his M5 he is only paying £300!!! Although he's only on 5k miles per year... which he doesnt even do.

Have you tried giving them a call then to see if they can at least match last years? Also, see if you can play around with your job title. I managed to save a couple of hundred by changing that alone.

How likely are they to check how many miles you cover? They don't ask the current mileage when you sign up for insurance

Milage doesn't change it much anyways. With my old Corsa I went from around 15k to 5k and it only saved me around £40 for the remainder of the policy (8 months). That works out to be around 6% of the total policy.

And if they really want, they can check the MOT stations for each record.

And if the car is pre-mot, it would have started at 0 when you got it, or at a set value from the dealer records so the calculation would be simple for that as well.

Not helped by "authorised repairers" charging stupid money and people like those on this forum who have happily crowed about getting £4-5ks worth of car rental via whatever that scumbag, ambulance-chasing hire company is that BMW seem to have shares in.....all turns what would be a £1,000 repair if it was out of your own pocket, into 5 or 10 times that amount because of such practices.....

indeed - same weekend paper had somebody writing into the motoring section that the hire company had charged the insurance company £30,000 for a months hire while there car was repaired
