Car insurance premiums

I have been looking at buying another car (again).

I did the comparison site stuff on a £40k M4 vert today. I am 54 (I know I don't look it) and the wife is 47 (she definitely does, bless her). For both of us the premium on a 450bhp turbo nutter b*stard car is.....................£288.00 a year! :o

That is stupid cheap. My gas bill is nearly that a month. :?

My daughter turns 17 soon, I bet to get insurance on a 15 year old Corsa will be £2,000 :o

You are probably right. The market is weird though. My lad paid less than half the premium for his 192bhp 2.5i than he was quoted for a 50(ish)bhp Hyundai i10. Go figure.

The first important thing for insurance companies I think, is your postcode, followed by are you between the ages of 17 and 22. There are lots of questions in between, including do you drive a plug-in hybrid 5 series BMW. But the last thing for me is, have you ever had a claim in the last 58 years of continual driving of cars, lorries, buses, riding motorcycles and driving track laying vehicles? If the answer is no, then the next question is, have you passed an advanced driving test with the IAM or ROSPA? If the answer to that is yes, then the quote is between £550 and £1000. :o

Got to say I was very surprised at my price at renewal. Protected no claims + legal cover + £100 total excess fully comp was £266 with SAGA. I was also able to lock in this price for 3 years! I live in a Manchester post code but the car is garaged at home.

SAGA so good I moved my wife’s 2020 Evoque over as well. £325 for same cover but business use added and kept on drive at night. :D

At least something is a bit cheaper than before!

I got a quote from Saga - I live in a decent area, good NCB. no commuting, garaged etc and got the offer of a three year deal but it was £384

Insurance definitely works in mysterious ways. :?

I went with Chris Knott last June for my MC and even with mods declared it was cheaper than they charged me for my 3.0Si 3 years earlier at the same address! :o

I got a quote from Chris Knott as well - They were £342 but it also allowed a winter sorn with a potential refund of part of the premium - The agent didn't know how much which wasn't any help! The also got some fundamentals wrong on the proposal form that they had submitted.

With this in mind I went with Tesco same cover and Defacto 5* ant the premium was £239

That's interesting - I had no problems with CK.

Unlike the year before when I used Adrian Flux. :(

I was with CK for the last two years and they were good  I didn't intend any criticism whatsoever - I will give them the opportunity again next year if I'm still vertical

I'm with Adrian Flux for both cars and premiums have dropped 2 years running  which is a complete waste of time as everything else is going up

Tim.

Saga for me, although I am only just old enough. It’s the cheapest car insurance policy I have ever had, ever.

I was with Saga on two cars - they p---ed me off big time on the zed, the charged £560 for a year as I had no no claims as I came out of a company car - they then gave me full claims at the end of the first year and wanted £470 quid for 5K miles a year

Also on the zed at £560 which had unlimited mileage, after 2 months when I asked to go to 5K miles a year, they offer £25 discount - laughable

I also had SWMBO car with saga on the three year deal, left after the second year as Direct line were £60 cheaper

Went to direct line who charged £250

Went to direct line for my run around 1400 Auto Corsa and they wanted £427 - went to eSure and for charged £207

Who the hell knows how it works or why, just seems like a sodding rip off which ever way :headbang:

I suspect they charge what they think they can get away with!

Highway robbery mate - basic 3rd party should be on the cost of fuel, the more you drive the more you pay and no on can escape having insurance

I'm not sure insurance should be on petrol - somehow I think most of us on here would end up paying more! And it wouldn't reflect geographical risks or car/driver risks.

Certainly should do Road Tax that way though!

How do you make it work in a decade with the shift to electric though? It is already a huge headache that government is trying to figure out. I do not think they can move the income from gas sales onto electricity as it would be unfaire to people not driving and electricity is a necessity so how do we cover that? A lot of people would not be happy about this but I think that a mileage based tax could be fair, then the question is: do you record mileage at MOTs (which can be easily a cheated) or do you use recording devices on futur cars?

That's a fair point - I haven't really go my head around the idea of electric cars yet!

At my age I'm hoping there will be enough ICE powered cars around to see me out.
