car hire abroad

Can anyone make sense of this new rule being introduced in June this year - apparently the paper attachment showing endorsements / points will no longer be valid - if you want to hire a car you will have to download a code which will allow the car hire companies to access your details online to check if you have any endorsements/points etc - the code is only valid for 72 hours :? and this change is not widely known throughout the EU - chaos is predicted.

We're off to Greece in July - being Greece I'm not too worried because they never seem to be particularly up to date with anything :) but still a little worrying.

I still have the old pink paper licence because as a fine upstanding law abiding citizen I've never been nicked for anything

I've never had a hire car company abroad ask for any details or the paper sheet. Just a two second look at the credit card bit of the licence and here's the keys sir  . Never been to Greece though. :D

It's interesting as PVR mentioned this back in November last year and the paper part is already defunct in the UK as of January.

However like the other thread re this started the other day I've never been asked for the paper part when I have been abroad. I doubt many hire companies will bother to check or they could do so prior to your arrival of you book online, which would be simple but not so simple if you just turn up and say I want a car. however so members did think it would cause chaos.

I think we will get an idea from next month as to just how manic it is. However you can also download a PDF of the document prior to leaving the country, not sure if they will accept that and you can also access your own license details on the dvla. https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

That was then plan but it has been delayed and so still required.

It's probably why they have introduced this new system to bridge the gap.

If you still have the old styple licence with no card you should be fine - as fine as you are to rely on a foreign rental firm to be accurate with paperwork, anyway.
It's people with the new card and(defunct in june I believe) counterpart that have to ask for the code.

Load of fuss over nothing. Memorise your NI number then use the website to get your online record, or do the code method.

I think the worst bit about it is I think largely it's unknown that any of this is needed.

Unless your semi into cars.

My brother had no idea of this change, he is off away in July and has a car booked.

Tbf I randomly stumbled on it on the BBC website or I wouldn't of known either!
