Car driving Wierdly

The OP can do what he likes with his car, that journey is just a waste of good petrol. When petrol runs out in a few years we will all be blaming people who drive a car for 3 miles instead of using human power.

Well who would have thought it the entire global warming thing is caused by me driving 3 miles to work and back in my car

Don't be so ridiculous. If you feel so strongly about this then why do you drive a z4 and not a super economical car or perhaps an electric vehical.

All I wanted was a little advice on a problem I am having with my car and I ended up being public enemy number 1

Aww don't take it too seriously you did hang your tail out by mentioning the 3 miles thing

... anyway since we are talking about the nasty effects of short journeys on engine oil, does your filler cap collect more mayo than a tramps dodah?

Totally agree - many of the comments are farcical.
It's your car to drive when and where you want.

Can I have the crown of environmental enemy as I fly to and from work every week and have done so for over a year

Talk about going off topic..... I had my z4 for 5 years.... And i did a 1.5mile drive back from the gym 5 days a week.... Plus on weekend i would drive to the gym and back 1.5 miles there and then 1.5miles back.... Its a 30 minute walk...

I had no mechanical wear... And after 49k miles my ca was still on its original disks and pads, battery etc.

As for the ops original query.... Have you plugged it yet and checked the error logs? If play in the suspension... Could be the abs sensor.

Absolutely and to answer your query the ABS speed sensors gave no faults and were all reading the same speed so I dont think its that.
Suspension bushes have arrived this morning so I will be fitting them on Saturday. As per my previous post the only error I get is for Steering Angle sensor but looking around on the net if the suspension is out of alignment this could well be the cause.
I tried to clear this code and it wouldnt go but hopefully if I fix the bushes and take it for a long drive it will re calibrate and the lights will go away :)

Yup I do get a bit of mayo under the oil filler. From what I remember BMW's are a bit prone to this anyway and given the time of year and my mostly short journeys I expect it :)

You mentioned in the original post about the wheel being noticeably off centre. Have you managed to see if anything has actually broken or is it just worn bushes?

No because of the shift I am on this week I am not able to get under the car and have a look. I plan to do the bushes tomorrow anyway so I will be giving the front suspension a good inspection at the same time. Hopefully nothing else is broken or too worn but who knows? :)

Good luck and I hope its plain sailing for you. The Z4 is relatively easy to work on so I'm sure you'll have it sorted soon. :driving:

Cheers, I will post back when the work is done

Well it’s sorted.
Got under the car Saturday morning and replaced the front control arm rear bushes.
Not too bad a job the hardest part was separating the bushes from the arms. Ended up using a g-clamp to get them off most of the way and then a bit of brute force.
Took me around 3 hours all in and the handling is transformed. No more tram lining or wandering and the wheel has centred back up in the arch.
I was hoping that the lights would go off with a long drive but no luck on that front so on Sunday morning I pulled the fuse for the steering column, turned the engine off and on and re fitted it. Lights all gone out and we are back to normal.
I have tested the ABS and DSC  and both are working fine.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I am just glad it cost me £20 for the cheap set of bushes and no more as I was expecting a large repair bill. If they go again I will repace with Polybushes as I have kept the old carriers.

Next step is a 4 wheel alignment I think

Chris

Glad you got it sorted mate, keep an eye on the bushes in the future as they are a weak point on the zed.

Got the alignment done yesterday and basically everything was out. They had to adjust the rear toe and camber and also the from toe. Steering has lightened up considerably following the change and it drives much better. Also noticed that the MPG has started to creep up a bit so thats a bonus as well
