Car buying dilemma - car now bought!

Evening all

I am thinking about coming back to the Z4 fold for a weekend car after buying my house and selling my Porsche 944 yesterday.

I have found two cars I like but unsure which route to take. Both cars are silver.

The first is a 2006 Z4 Convertible 3.0si manual, which has done just over 114k Miles. It has the usual bells and whistles, including nav and black sport electric seats.

The second is a 2007 Z4 Convertible 2.5si auto, which has done circa 73k Miles. Again this has a good spec with red sport electric seats but no nav.

Both have been very well looked after and good histories behind them. The 2.5si is around £1k cheaper. I honestly do not know which may be the better buy. The 2.5si appeals due to the much lower mileage and the contrasting red leather seats, but it is auto, which although not a bad thing, I don’t know whether it will be less fun to drive? I like the sound of having the 3.0si engine but the price difference and extra miles slightly deter me.

What are your opinions, recognising that this will probably vary :D

My first thought was. Keep looking. A little patience and traveling usually pays dividends.

The Zed wears the miles well, but 114k is a lot in any ones book and from your comments I'm not convinced you want an auto for your weekend toy.

Maybe it depends what you plan to use it for.

Mine has only ever been a Sunday/Special Day car so for me it had to be a manual and as I only wanted a Coupe it had to be a 3.0Si (an M wasn't in budget sadly).

But for a busy commute as a daily driver maybe an Auto would be preferable?

Unless that is an issue, I'd just have to bite the bullet and go for the 3.0Si - they do get down the road pretty quickly when you want some fun.

And I wouldn't be overly concerned about the mileage - history and condition would influence me more. I sold an E91 325i with the N52 engine earlier this year that was still running sweetly on 139K miles.

Yep what Buzy says.
It sounds like neither are grabbing you and therefore neither are the right car irrespective of mileage. Keep looking and wait until you know. For a weekend car I'd want a manual so you can 'drive' it properly.

Personally, I'd wait another month or so until summer is a distant memory and selling soft tops is harder than shaking dogsh*te off your shoe

Thanks guys, I think you are all right, neither of them are jumping out at me as a ‘must have it’.

Good call on waiting a month or so, I’m sure the price will start to drop soon. I’m just impatient

I wouldn't (and didn't) let a mileage of over 100,000 miles put me off. A car from the 80s or early 90s might be a hefty gamble, but post-2000 cars are a different matter in that area (provided they've been serviced, naturally). The idea of a lightweight RWD roadster with an auto 'box is an oddity to me, but to each their own! :)

Set up alerts on EBay, gumtree, autotrader etc and see new cars as they’re listed.

Personally, I avoid traders like the plague and stick to private sellers. That might just be me!

If it’s going to be a weekend car?, so you can afford to take your time, set your self a list of ‘must have’s’ and ‘nice to have’s’.... you’re probably going to have to compromise on something somewhere, but the right car will come along eventually :D

I think that's good advice

For a weekend car, IMO got to be a manual and I'd suggest waiting for a 3.0Si.

IMO Nav not so important, but spec wise, I'd consider Xenons and heated seats (for a Roadster) essential.

I'd test drive both, just to help you decide what engine/transmission you actually want. Mileage wouldn't put me off if the cars been looked after right and 110k these days is nothing, certainly not leggy in a modern car, especially a BMW. There's still a perception in the UK that 100k and a car's done that's not shared the other side of the pond for example and its simply not true. This is particularly true if your prepared to spend a bit overhauling shockers etc that might need a refresh. The hardest thing with a leggy car can be finding a buyer when your done due to the fore mentioned perception in the UK.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I actually went and bought a completely different Z4 yesterday.

It’s a 2007 Z4 3.0si auto in Ruby Black - so a combination of the two I was looking at previously :D

Ruby Black with a light interior is a great colour combination, especially when the sun shines!

And the 3.0Si is as good as it gets, barring an Alpina or an M so enjoy. :driving:

Very nice! Judging by your first pic, I thought you'd bought an Australian version. :P

Whoops, they looked fine on my phone and iPad but clearly not on the desktop. Hopefully fixed now :)
