Car build numbers

I've read in other threads that the last 3 digits of your vin is your build number.
Mine is 028, a 2006 facelift, so does this mean mine is the 28th since facelift? As I can't see it being 28th overall!

Theres also a number and build date label in the engine bay, just noticed mine yesterday!

Sorry for the confusion, maybe it's just an M thing as it was an M thread that was talking about the 3 digits being the build number. Think that was coupe and roadster.
We'll just have to upgrade our rides!!

I believe you mean Alpinas - our last 3 of the Alpina VIN (we have two VINs, original BMW donor and the Alpina VIN) is the build number, also referenced in the Alpina plate in the cabin.
