Car battery dealer warning - is this right?

My E86 is still in its original BMW battery but it's starting to fail on me. A new battery from BMW is £170 and the dealer said my car expects a serial number from a genuine BMW battery otherwise I'll get a bunch of fault codes and other issues. I'm hoping this is not true and I can fit any brand in there without issues?

Load of crap. You only connect a constant +/- 12V supply, the car has no way of knowing the brand or serial number of the battery.

Newer BMW's (starting from the likes of E60, E90 etc.) require you to "register" the battery (basically tell the car to reset measured battery life and provide capacity), but it still can be any brand. But E85 is still before that era.

Fekin dealers man! jeezus.
Don't know their arse from their elbow and when they do, they try and rip you off!

He’s talking complete nonsense as others have said. Absolutely no way to register a battery on the E86. The worst thing that can happen is your windows need a reset after changing- simple manual process.

I took my vw touran into a dealer and they tried to sell me a sunroof service! Car doesn't have a sunroof!!
Same dealer even said the smell of fuel I was experiencing was down to the diesel particular filter even though the car is petrol.
I've no idea where they find these people 🤷‍♂️

There's talking crap due to lack of knowledge and deliberately lying to make a sale. This ones the latter for me.
Tayna batteries are good supplying most makes. Well regarded on here and about £90 delivered for an E86 for a better brand.

Had the guy at the servicing department for one of Glasgow's dealerships, we'll call it Harry's, tell me that the previous 2003 e85 2.5 might need new glow plugs. That was around 2006.

The other dealership in Glasgow, we'll call it Douglas, a few years ago when the car was in to get the window regulator replaced. Woman dealing with the servicing gave me a patronising, tilted head tale about the brakes..... Your brake pads are down to 13mm so you need to watch that.

She obviously thought I'd just tell them to replace the pads.

Told her the following.... The discs and pads were replaced with Brembo discs and pads along with HEL braided hoses and the brake fuid was changed too either that year or the year before and if they needed replaced I'd have had a warning either on the dashboard or on the monthly check the car gets with Carly for BMW. If the pads have prematurely worn out then I'll be going back to the supplier / manufacturer. Also, thanks for the attempt to rip me off for new pads when I don't actually require new pads now f**k off and get my car round the front if it's ready and stop wasting my time as I've been here for three hours for a 1 hour job I was quoted and I'll only be paying for one hour.

There was a bloke in when I went back the 2nd and last time to get the window regulator adjusted. Had a suitcase with him and I asked if he was going on holiday. Told me that they had his car in for a service and this was them bringing it back again as they had advised that the coolant was getting low on a 1 year old car and it was best to replace the coolant regularly.

After the shocked look I must have given him he asked why I was surprised.

All I said was... Don't know about your car mate but the BMW coolant is usually for the lifetime of the car and they're possibly ripping you off. Perhaps you should check the lifetime of the coolant and what BMW recommends for your car.

The guy said he'd be taking it up with the dealership on his return from Spain. Wonder how he got on.

Dealerships? Mostly crooks!
